  • Efficacy of the North American 80 series patch test?

Patch tests are intended to identify causes of contact dermatitis - such as the reaction to cheap jewelry which contains nickel and plants such as poison ivy. Such rashes are usually highly localized to the contact site and are inflammatory - the skin gets damaged and usually, the inflamed skin gets crusty. The rash is more than just red bumps or red spots. A generalized rash is unlikely to be this type, and with no history of contact with cosmetics or some other product in the area of the rash in a certain pattern, the tests are likely to be uninterpretable. • Can I give my 7 month old cow milk?

    Yes READ MORE

  • What's this on my body?

It is hard to see for sure, but the rash looks most like hives. It does not appear to be a classical "ampicillin" rash or "E. Multiforme." It also does not appear to be the rash of "scarlet fever." The rash could be an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin, but it is also possible that the rash is simply a part of the strep infection, as hives are commonly a part of a strep infection. READ MORE

  • Can a 6-year-old take allergy medicine?

Yes, at doses adjusted for age and weight. READ MORE

  • Can I give my 9 years old daughter allergy medications?

    Yes READ MORE

  • Is the COVID vaccine safe for high blood pressure patients?

    Yes READ MORE

  • Will my 16 year old have a bad reaction to the covid shot if she was allergic to the meningitis shot?

No. None of the mRNA (Pfizer and Moderna) vaccines have anything in common with the meningitis vaccine. READ MORE

  • Can I get the COVID vaccination if I have high blood pressure?

    Yes READ MORE

  • My child has hives?

The cause is probably not a classic allergy, as these are usually very obvious to patients or parents. Blind allergy testing will just be confusing and is not necessary. Recommend Zyrtec 5 mg twice a day if necessary. A medical evaluation ( not allergy testing ) may be necessary if the hives persist for more than six weeks. READ MORE

  • Why does my child get frequent colds?

Children below the age of 8 or 9 will routinely get a viral illness as often as every 5 or 6 weeks, especially during the school year. The memorable illnesses will generally be the result of complications caused by underlying predispositions such as asthma or anatomy issues leading to ear or sinus infections. Repeated complications that do not readily respond to routine therapy should prompt an evaluation of the immune system. Allergies can clearly lead to increased complications or be mistaken for a “cold.” READ MORE

  • Can an adult or child be allergic to the flu shot?

If allergy to eggs is the concern, the ACIP recommends that the shot be given -- risk is minimal if any. I have never had a problem administering the flu shot with a history of egg allergy. There is a protocol for giving it in divided doses if a patient is nervous, but it is usually not necessary. The flu shot should be avoided if there is a CLEAR history of having an anaphylactic reaction immediately following the injection of the flu vaccine. READ MORE

  • Does this look like a spider bite?

It is possibly a spider bite, but I would still get it checked - esp if she appears sick or has a fever. READ MORE

  • Are children's allergy testing kits reliable?

It depends on the source. Interpreting the results is the difficult part. For example, a positive food test can be interpreted as significant ONLY if there is an impressive hx for that food - don’t “fish” for a food allergy to explain a bothersome problem. False-positive food tests are extremely common! READ MORE

  • What are the symptoms of a nickel allergy?

It is a contact dermatitis similar to poison ivy. The reaction is inflammatory only where the metal contacts the skin. Best example is the chronic inflammation on the stomach where the nickel button on jeans persistently contacts the skin. The most common examples are caused by inexpensive jewelry - pierced earrings, etc. READ MORE

  • Why do I have swelling in my mouth after having pink eye?

Many possible reasons. You would need to see a doctor to sort through the possibilities. This could be immunological (not likely classic allergy), infectious, etc. READ MORE

  • Lymphocyte

Yes. 50% is well within the very wide range of normal for a ten year old. READ MORE

  • What causes my eyes to water in the morning?

Allergy could certainly be responsible given the onset after moving into the house. Were there any animals in the house before you moved in? Cat allergen lasts months. Mold could also be an issue. Dust mite allergy often leads to AM symptoms, but this would be a less likely cause unless you are sleeping in a different bed with different linens or pillows. It might be worth leaving the sheets and pillow cases in the dryer for 90 minutes before putting them on the bed and putting allergy cases on the pillow and mattress to test this possibility. READ MORE

  • Can bed bugs cause an allergic reaction?

I would not assume your rash was caused by a reaction to the bed bugs. READ MORE

  • Is this an allergy?

I would personally doubt that this is a “classic” allergy. “Classic allergy" is the type of allergy generally evaluated by searching for specific IgE antibody directed at something in particular. I would suspect that a “typical” immune response has occurred that is accidentally activating the “allergy cells" that produce histamine. It is unlikely that an allergy testing “fishing expedition” will result in any meaningful results. This may require a general medical work up of it persists for over 6-8 weeks. Be wary of anyone recommending allergy testing when there is no history that can be correlated with the results of such tests! READ MORE

  • I feel dizzy after thyronorm. Is it normal or will the dosage have to be altered?

I would not assume the thyroid medicine is responsible for your dizziness. Get checked!! READ MORE
