Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Ricardo Hanel, who serves patients in Jacksonville, Florida.
A devoted neurosurgeon, Dr. Hanel is known for his skill in treating acute stroke and cerebrovascular conditions with ground-breaking endovascular therapy that can be performed from inside the blood vessel. He also has a special interest in neurosurgical research.
Currently, he is the Co-Medical Director of the Cerebral Cavernous Malformations Program at Baptist Health & Co-Medical Director of Baptist Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center. He is also affiliated with Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville and Wolfson Children’s Hospital.
His areas of expertise are endovascular neurosurgery, brain aneurysms, acute stroke intervention, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), arteriovenous fistulas (AVF), cerebrovascular disease, skull base neurosurgery, and brain tumors.
“My philosophy of care is centered on the patient, based on education, encouragement, and understanding. I feel that it is important to educate my patients about their conditions and options, thus allowing them to make informed decisions. I take the time to engage my patients in their own care, and I firmly believe this helps them make better decisions” expressed Dr. Hanel.
Recognizing the emotions associated with illness, when treating his patients, it is sometimes at their most frightening moment. The surgeries he performs can make an immediate and long-term difference in his patients’ lives and the lives of their families. Dr. Hanel loves proving that what was once thought impossible can be done.
He believes that fast access to excellent care is critical for treatment of stroke and other cerebrovascular conditions. That’s why he enjoys being a part of the team at Lyerly Neurosurgery and Baptist Health.
Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Hanel graduated with his medical degree from the Federal University of Parana in Brazil in 1997. He then went on to complete his residency at Hospital Nossa Senhora das Graças, also in Brazil, in 2001.
After relocating to the United States, he performed his fellowship at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 2004. He also performed an additional fellowship at Barrow Neurological Institute, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in 2007.
Passionate about his profession, the doctor is board-certified in neurosurgery through the Brazilian Board of Neurosurgery. He is also an active member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, the Brazilian Society of Neurosurgery, and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (Candidate Fellow).
Holding an academic title, Dr. Hanel serves as a Courtesy Assistant Professor within the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville.
