Academically, Dr. Ackerman received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia in Athens. He graduated with his medical degree from the University of South Florida in Tampa and performed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham/Eye Foundation Hospital.

Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in ophthalmology through the American Board of Ophthalmology, an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

As such, Dr. Ackerman has been a leader in adopting and implementing the latest technologies relating to cataract and vision correction surgery, not only in the State of Georgia, but on a national level. 

Furthermore, he has extensive training in glaucoma therapy which he received through working with the top international glaucoma specialists, and has been involved with international relief missions restoring sight in underprivileged parts of the world.
