Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Krunal Patel, who serves patients in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Dr. Patel is a nephrologist whose special interests include acute kidney injury, hypertension, kidney stones, and ICU nephrology. He joined Portsmouth Nephrology in Portsmouth, Virginia back in 2013.

Portsmouth Nephrology is pleased to provide complete, personalized renal care to the community. The team of professionals working there provide consultative and ongoing care for patients with a myriad of kidney-related conditions such as chronic kidney disease, hypertension, acute kidney injury, hematuria, proteinuria, kidney stones, inherited cystic kidney disease, and more. 

On the subject of his educational background, Dr. Patel earned his medical degree from the PDU Medical College in Rajkot, India. Upon relocating to the United States, he went on to complete his residency at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, followed by his fellowship in nephrology at the same educational venue. He also completed an additional fellowship in critical care at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

Among his achievements, the doctor is board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care when the time comes.
