Get to know Endocrinologist Dr. Khaldoun Alnabelsi, who serves patients in Rancho Mirage, California.
Fluent in both English and Arabic, Dr. Alnabelsi is an endocrinologist who has been on staff at Eisenhower Medical Center since 1998 and has served as Section Chief of Endocrinology.
Eisenhower Health has been a leader in health care for the Coachella Valley since it opened its medical center in 1971. Since then, the Eisenhower Medical Center has been growing steadily, adding services, capabilities, and facilities to anticipate and meet the needs of the expanding area. It exists to serve the changing healthcare needs of the region by providing excellence in patient care with supportive education and research.
A 1983 graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of Damascus University in Syria, Dr. Alnabelsi relocated to the United States to further his training. He undertook a residency in pathology at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston. Thereafter, he went on to serve his residency in internal medicine at Griffin Hospital-Yale-New Haven Hospital, followed by his fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. While he was at Cornell, he co-authored (with the Chief of Endocrinology) a chapter in the medical textbook “Corticosteroids & the Endocrine System.”
“Endocrinology appealed to me because there is so much mental work involved. It’s like putting together the pieces of a puzzle, correlating different hormone values with the patient’s symptoms…reviewing each lab value and coming up with a diagnosis and treatment plan. It’s so rewarding to correct patients’ metabolic diseases so they will feel healthy and can get back to their regular activities.” as stated by the doctor.
In April of 2009, he was awarded Physician of the Month at Eisenhower Medical Center. Additionally, he received recognition as one of the top 70 physicians in the Palm Springs area as chosen by his peers.
Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus, as well as adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid disorders, among others.
