Get to know Neurologist Dr. Eugene Ramsay, who serves patients in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Dr. Ramsay is a faculty member of Ochsner Health, having established a Comprehensive Epilepsy Center to serve the citizens of Louisiana. He is also on the National Professional Advisory Committee of Epilepsy Alliance America, which is composed of epilepsy experts across a wide range of medical disciplines.
Prior to this, he was a professor of neurology and director of the International Center for Epilepsy at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and served as a clinical associate professor at Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy in Fort Lauderdale.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science and medical degrees from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Dr. Ramsay completed an internship in the Department of Surgery at Shands Teaching Hospital, a fellowship in the Department of Neurology at Shands Teaching Hospital, and a fellowship in epilepsy and electroencephalography at the VA Medical Center in Gainesville.
Board-certified in neurology and electroencephalography, the doctor is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.
In addition to being a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, Dr. Ramsay is a member of the American Electroencephalographic Society, the American Epilepsy Society, and the American Neurological Association.
From 1988 to 1990, he served as president of the Southern Clinical Neurological Society. He has trained 28 fellows, several of whom are now leading epileptologists at other epilepsy centers.
Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. It deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the central and peripheral nervous systems, including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle. Neurologists are specialists who treat diseases of the brain and spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. A brilliant author, Dr. Ramsay is the Chief Editor of the book, Neurobiology of Epilepsy and Aging, as well the textbook, Seizures and Epilepsy in the Elderly with A. James Rowan. He is also the author or coauthor of more than 120 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, 28 book chapters, and a book.
The recipient of more than 80 grants for research in the treatment of epilepsy, one of Dr. Ramsay’s leading accomplishments has been the completion of a large multicenter study on the treatment of epilepsy in a geriatric population.
