Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. James M. Hartford, who serves patients in Palo Alto, California.

Dr. Hartford is a board certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who is a part of the Sutter Health network. Namely, he practices out of Palo Alto Center, located in Palo Alto, California.

With a love for people, Dr. Hartford is family oriented and views the patient/physician relationship as a partnership. Locally, his hospital affiliations extend to Sequoia Hospital, Redwood City, and El Camino Hospital in Mountain View.

Born and raised in California, Dr. Hartford attended college at Princeton University  and medical school at Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in 1989.

Subsequently, he performed his preliminary general surgery residency at New England Deaconess Hospital from 1989-1991, an Orthopedic surgery residency  at Dartmouth-Hitchcock/Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital from 1991-1995, and his fellowship in adult reconstructive orthopedics at Stanford Hospital from 1995-1996.

Board certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Hartford is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons.

Dr. Hartford’s professional focus is on hip and knee replacements for the treatment of end stage arthritis of the hip or knee. He has been performing the direct anterior approach to total hip replacement since 2006. He also performs hip surface replacements and robotic total knee replacements when indicated.
