He is one of only a few physicians in the world who has this unique combination of expertise. At present, he is the Medical Director of the Texas Institute for Kidney and Endocrine Disorders in Lufkin, Texas. Experts in diabetes, nutrition, endocrinology, and nephrology, he and his team are committed to providing a continuum of care across a broad range of medical issues. With more than three decades of professional experience, Dr. Sloan serves as the Medical Director of SNG Lufkin Dialysis, the Medical Director of Polk Education Center (Lufkin), the Co-director of the Memorial Wound Treatment Center (Lufkin), and as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. 

The doctor is board-certified in internal medicine, endocrinology, and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, which is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

With a recognition that goes above and beyond board certification, he is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology, a Fellow of the  American Society of Nephrology, and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He also holds a certification in Clinical Densitometry from the International Society for Clinical Densitometry and the American College of Endocrinology. 

After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering and his Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas in Austin, Dr. Sloan went on to obtain his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1985. He then completed his residency within the Department of Internal Medicine at the same educational venue in 1988.

Wanting to further his training, he completed his clinical fellowship in endocrinology and diabetes within the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1990, followed by his clinical fellowship in nephrology within the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Nephrology at the said venue in 1991. 

Actively involved in advocating for the right to access good healthcare, Dr. Sloan is recognized by his peers in more than one specialty for his expertise and commitment to learning, teaching, research, and patient care. He has been selected to sit on multiple committees and task forces for the American Association of Clinical Nephrologists, the Renal Physicians Association, the American Society of Nephrology, the Endocrine Society, the Texas Medical Association, and the Angelina County Medical Society (delegate). 

Furthermore, he has been a member of the Texas Diabetes Council Health Care Professionals Committee for over two decades. This committee writes the state guidelines for diabetes care and advises the Governor of Texas and the Texas Legislature on diabetes-related issues. He visits Congress and the Texas Legislature frequently where he lobbies for the above organizations and his patients to try and improve our medical system. “I don’t believe in just complaining about the system. I believe in being actively involved in changing the system to improve healthcare for my patients and others” as stated by the doctor. 

Well respected in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Sloan serves as a consultant and as a member of multiple advisory boards. He has also been on various hospital committees at both Woodland Heights and CHI Memorial Hospitals in Lufkin. 

Committed to his profession, his main areas of research include insulin resistance syndrome, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, diabetic nephrology, lipid metabolism, bone metabolism, anemia of renal disease, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. He is involved in community-based research, publishes several scholarly articles a year, as well as speaks nationally and internationally at various medical conferences and meetings.
