Get to know Anesthesiologist Dr. Kathryn S. Newport, who serves patients in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Being a board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Newport can be found on staff at Southwestern Medical Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. As a 199-bed full-service hospital, Southwestern Medical Center provides a comprehensive range of medical services and high-quality care. Among her various professional roles, Dr. Newport served as the Chief of Surgery at Southwestern Medical Center from 2015 to 2016, the Medical Director of Anesthesiology at Southwestern Medical Center from 2002 to 2016, the Medical Director of Anesthesiology at Lawton Indian Hospital in 2017, and the Chairman of the Medical Management Committee at Southwestern Medical Center from 2006 to 2016. She also served on the Physician Leadership Organization at Southwestern Medical Center from 2010 to 2015 and on the Medical Executive Committee at Southwestern Medical Center from 2015 to 2016. To date, the doctor is affiliated with multiple hospitals in the area, including Comanche County Memorial Hospital and Lawton Indian Hospital. 

In 1987, she earned her medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She then went on to complete her residency in anesthesiology at the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo. Before long, she became board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care. Their mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology.

To further advance her efforts in her field, Dr. Newport remains a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology, the Oklahoma Society of Anesthesiology, the Oklahoma State Medical Association, and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. 

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure and temperature, anesthesiologists also measure the patient’s respiration.
