Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Justin Mirza, who serves patients in Smithtown, New York.

A Long Island based orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Mirza works with patients at Mirza Orthopedics alongside his father, Dr. Ather Mirza. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions and injuries affecting both the upper and lower extremities. 

Many of the surgeries Dr. Mirza performs are done in the outpatient setting. He regularly performs minimally invasive surgeries such as arthroscopic carpal tunnel release, cubital tunnel release, and rotator cuff repair.

Mirza Orthopedics is the premier orthopedic hand, wrist, elbow & shoulder center on Long Island, serving active patients of all ages from Suffolk County, Nassau County, and beyond. The Smithtown-based practice offers the latest nonsurgical and surgical treatment options for all types of hand and upper extremity injuries and conditions. Following in his father’s footsteps, Dr. Mirza has become known for his unparalleled commitment to orthopedic research and his focus on highly personalized care for his patients of all ages in Suffolk and Nassau County.

As a level 1 trauma surgeon at Stony Brook University Hospital, he treats patients with complex fractures. In addition, he provides limb-saving vascular and nerve repairs, as well as finger and hand replacement surgeries for patients who have suffered from severe injuries. 

Academically, Dr. Mirza holds a Bachelor’s degree from Denison University and a graduate certificate in Biology from the Drexel University College of Medicine. He graduated from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2009 and went on to finish his residency in orthopedic surgery at North Shore Long Island Jewish in 2014 and his fellowship in hand surgery at Stony Brook University Hospital in 2015.

With a focus on surgical techniques, the doctor is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery (AOBOS). The AOBOS is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

Dedicated to getting patients back to their active lives with better results and less downtime, Dr. Mirza is a Clinical Professor at Stony Brook University Hospital, the Co-Director of the Stony Brook Hand Clinic, a police surgeon for the Police Surgeons Benevolent Association of New York, and a Team Physician for the Nassau and Suffolk County Wrestling Championships and High School Football teams. He is also an attending physician at St. Catherine Sierra Medical Center, St. Charles Hospital, and Mather Hospital.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, he is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the New York Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Association for Hand Surgery, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Police Surgeons Benevolent Association of New York, The Thomas Hartman Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, and Knights of Columbus.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Having published numerous research articles on conditions and treatments of the hand and upper extremity, Dr. Mirza regularly presents his research around the world. He has committed himself to ground-breaking biomedical advances such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy, a treatment which he offers for the hand, elbow, shoulder, knee, and ankle. He is also dedicated to the product development and implementation of cutting-edge medical devices, including the SECURE intramedullary nail fixation device for metacarpal and phalangeal fractures.
