Is surgery really needed for kidney stones?
Hi, Make sure that your son is checked for HYPERPARATHYROIDSM. He needs to check his serum calcium and PTH (parathormone) level. This will indicate why he is forming stones at a young age. IF the stones are too large to pass, then the stones can be "shattered" with ultrasound and flushed. If the stones are stuck in the kidney calyx system, operative intervention will be needed. Diet counseling will also be needed. READ MORE
Can excess bleeding during a surgery have an after effect?
I think you meant to say that she had severe bleeding. IF she had severe bleeding, lowering her hemoglobin level below 9, she probably would have needed a transfusion. If not, she will be anemic until her blood is brought back to normal through the normal process in the bone marrow aided by a good diet. READ MORE
Is constipation normal after a bypass surgery?
It is common after any surgery that requires pain medication that has CODEINE or even HYDROCORDONE. You can avoid this by drinking a cup of Senna tea (Slimming green tea) every other night or twice a week. READ MORE
Gallbladder removal
If you had laparoscopic surgery, sometimes some fluid (serum or bile) collects where the the gall bladder was. Most of the time this gets absorbed but if pain persistes you will need an ultrasound of the abdomen to find out more if you have a persistent bile leak. READ MORE
How long after an appendix surgery can I resume swimming?
Nowadays, appendectomy is done via laparoscopy, very often. If that is the case, I let my patients go swimming 2-3 weeks after the wound is healed. READ MORE
What is the procedure like for hair transplant surgery?
Surgical transplant surgery is follicular grafting. There are several grades and ways of doing it (laser, etc). This is very expensive, often costing over $10,000. However, now Stem Cell Therapy is used to grow hair even in bald scalps. The procedure takes about one hour and is far less expensive. However, this also takes about 6 months to see full growth and may have to be repeated. Cost is somewhere around $3,00-$4,000. READ MORE
What can I expect from a breast lumpectomy?
If your lumps are CYSTS, they can be easily aspirated in the office/clinic. If they are SOLID tumors, then surgical excision through carefully planned cosmetic incisions will give very good results. After surgery, the area will remain firm and lumpy for about 4 weeks or more due to the healing tissue (fibroblast activity) and collection of serum (body fluid) at times. READ MORE
Hernia
Ejaculation is not an issue. You are 4 weeks into the healing process and you should be OK. READ MORE
After an anal fissure surgery, how often should the dressing be changed?
The dressings should be removed in 24 hrs. Most convenient and less painful way is to let it come off by itself during showering. After that a peripad (female pad) can be placed over the area without any adhesive tape. READ MORE
What happens when a patient bleeds out during surgery?
In a real-life operation, if bleeding occurs in any part of the body: 1. DO NOT PANIC 2. APPLY FIRM PRESSURE AT THE SITE OF THE BLEEDING until it stops. Exception, of course, is the neck where one has to be careful not to "choke to death." 3. In the operating room, we pack the area for a few minutes and slowly remove the packing to identify the source of bleeding and clamp as necessary and tie off the bleeder. If it is capillary or small vessel bleed, then certain medications (powder or dressing type) is applied to stop the bleeding. Transfusion is necessary if the hemoglobin falls very low, for example, below 9 g. READ MORE
What are the most common side effects of a tumor removal?
Good idea! No one should be walking around with a known tumor in any part of the body. Cancer is so common that you cannot afford to neglect them. There is always a risk in having stomach surgery with associated anesthesia side effects/complications. Risks: Death, anastamotic leak, infection of the wound, bleeding from the site, and narrowing of outlet due to scarring are the common ones. Side effects depend on the type of surgery for the tumor and then reconstruction: a) No side effects noteworthy b) Narrowing of the "joints" c) Anemia and other nutritional problems, like weight loss d) DVT of the leg veins if not ambulated early READ MORE
Retracting testicle in adult following inguinal hernia repair
Retraction may be temporarily due to spasm of the muscles around the cord. Once the scar tissue softens up, the testis will come down to the scrotum easily. As long as it is NOT INSIDE the abdomen, you do not have to worry. READ MORE
What risk factors are associated with an abdominal surgery?
Depends where the benign mass is. If it is in the abdominal wall, no need to fear unless the tumor is on a nerve. If it is inside the abdomen, then there are the usual side effects and anesthesia risk and the risk of DVT. READ MORE
How soon before my heart surgery should I stop smoking?
STOP RIGHT NOW AND DON'T EVER START AGAIN! READ MORE
After foot surgery, how long will it take for me to start walking?
Depends on the type of surgery, the post operative dressing used (plaster boot ?) and other hardware used like pins and screws. You should ask your performing surgeon. READ MORE
Since I had my appendix removed, I haven't really had an appetite. Is this normal?
Usually, a regular, uncomplicated appendectomy, either laparoscopically or through a small right lower quadrant incision, should not affect the appetite. After mine, I couldn't wait to eat! If there is a post-operative abscess, then I can understand that affecting your appetite. Check your white blood cell count. If it is elevated, then further examination by the surgeon is indicated. Gallstones
This is normal either due to "gravel" or a non-functioning gall bladder. READ MORE
How should I mentally prepare myself for surgery?
Good question. What is the surgery for? If it is for something that is interfering with your day to day life (example, tumor, cancerous or otherwise, infection or abscess, hernia etc), then LOOK FORWARD to the operation with POSITIVE HEALING THOUGHTS. Remember, EVERYTHING starts with a thought. Thoughts are vibrations and have frequencies. When you have positive vibrations, then healing hormones will be secreted by the body and you will have no problem. Try not to be SCARED as this is a negative vibration. It is a good idea to spend a few minutes with mindful meditation for healing. I find that YouTube is an excellent source for this. READ MORE
After surgery what can I do to get rid of the scars?
During the early stages of scar formation use of SCAR REMOVAL CREAMS will help somewhat. IF you are prone to keloids then the surgeon should inject Kenalog (steroid) into the edges to prevent EXCESS scar tissue formation. READ MORE
My husband is getting surgery soon. How should we prepare?
Depends a lot on the type of surgery and IF the surgery is necessary. IF it is definitely necessary, everything should be done to prevent infection as this can be disastrous at times with the diabetes going astray and causing poor wound healing and sometimes worse! READ MORE
