Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Hiep Nguyen, who serves patients in Kissimmee, Florida.

Dr. Nguyen is a highly trained cardiothoracic surgeon at Florida Heart & Lung Institute of Osceola in Kissimmee, Florida. He specializes in various procedures and techniques, including minimally invasive cardiac surgery, minimally invasive valve repair, and replacement, minimally invasive endograft vascular surgery, robotic CABG surgery, and aortic surgery.

The doctor’s approach to patient care is treating the patient as his own family, and as he would want to be treated. “There is a mystique about the heart – it is the soul of the person. It is satisfying to see patients recover quickly and to see the results of surgery” he stated.

Bringing significant experience in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery, he is affiliated with AdventHealth Orlando, AdventHealth Heart of Florida, and the Heart and Vascular Institute of Osceola Regional Medical Center. He is also on faculty as an Assistant Professor at the University of Central Florida School of Medicine.

Born in Vietnam, Dr. Nguyen grew up in Houston, Texas. He knew at an early age that he wanted to be a surgeon after observing his father working with American surgeons in M.A.S.H. units. He obtained his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He then completed his residency in general surgery at New York Medical College and his fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at New York University in New York City. He graduated from Harvard Business School in 2020 with a Certificate in Business Analytics.

Most recently, Dr. Nguyen served as the Surgical Director of the TAVR program and as the Surgical Director of Minimal Invasive Cardiac Surgery at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Health System in Texas. Prior to that, he spent 10 years at Christian Care Health Systems in Delaware where he served as Director of the Cardiac Surgical ICU, Director of the Aortic Program, and Surgical Director of the TAVR program before returning to Texas.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Furthermore, he is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery (ABTS). The ABTS is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs.

Among Dr. Nguyen’s most notable achievements include: Patients’ Choice Award (2018), On-Time Doctor Award (2018), and Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2018). He is the recipient of the Society of Thoracic Surgery Foundation Sheridan scholarship in 2010 and the Star Newcomer Cardiac Surgeon in Orlando, Florida in 2019.

On a more personal note, he enjoys fishing, biking, and spending time at the beach with family. He decided to relocate to Florida to better take advantage of these activities.
