Can kidney infections go away on their own?
I am sorry to hear that about your son. It is unusual for boys to get "kidney infection" but if such problem was diagnosed he must receive antibiotics. He also may need to be seen by a pediatrics urologist to rule out any urinary structural abnormality which could predispose him to kidney infection. So the answer to your question is that it should not be untreated to resolve on its own. READ MORE
How long does brain surgery last?
I can imagine going through brain surgery is a very stressful thing both for patient and their loved ones. I assume you are asking "how long does the operation take?" It would be difficult to tell you how long a surgery would take without knowing the source and location of the problem. In this situation I am sure the neurosurgeon who will be performing the procedure will be explaining the length of time of the surgery. Some brain tumor resections are performed with patient awake and responsive to questions. This is to assure maximum resection of the tumor without effecting surrounding functional brain tissue. The patient may be asked to move extremities or report numbness if the surgeon is approaching normal brain tissue. This way he or she can remove as much of the tumor as possible. Occasionally a patient may not tolerate this or may need to be put on general anesthesia in the middle of the procedure. In those situations the surgeon has be very cautious and may only be able to do a sub-total resection of the mass. The answer to your question is that the duration of the surgery is very much multi-factorial and unpredictable. READ MORE
How can my daughter treat hives?
Hives (Urticaria) is caused by release of histamine which causes local edema under the skin. The acute hives can be treated with anti-histamines such as over the counter Benadryl, claritin, zyrtec, xyzal, and with prescription steroids such as prednisone. Knowing what caused it, how ever, is just as important as the acute treatment. The most common foods that can cause hives are nuts, chocolate, fish, tomatoes, eggs, fresh berries, and milk. Fresh foods can cause hives more often than cooked foods as cooking can alter some antigenic factors in food. Certain food additives and preservatives could also cause this reaction. If this problem is recurrent you can see an allergist and do a blood or skin test for allergies. Stress, substances, and mechanical pressure over skin can lower the threshold of histamine release. So given exposure to the cause the person would more likely experience hives. You can commonly see it under belt line, bra line, or areas of scratched skin due to the mechanical pressure over those areas. In rare cases it could be a manifestation of systemic diseases but you must refer to your physician to investigate those. READ MORE
Can taking pain medication for too long affect your health?
That is an excellent question. If you are referring to opioid pain medications the answer is YES. Long term use of opioids causes an array of health problems. For one, your nervous system increases the number and sensitivity of pain receptors in the body. This happens because the body does not like being numb and tries to balance this with increasing sensitivity. This is why withdrawal from narcotics causes diffuse body pain. Long term use of these drugs suppress sex hormones leading to loss of libido and other consequences of low sex hormones. Opioids also lead to disturbance of serotonin causing mood disturbance such as depression, and sleep disorder. Disturbance of other hormones such as cortisol and thyroid, cardiovascular stress, and osteoporosis are also among consequences of long term opioid use. This may sound scary but if these medications are stopped on a timely fashion most of these problems are reversible. Considering you have only been taking these for one year and the fact that you asked this question tells me you will most like have good prognosis and will work to find alternative therapies and avoid long term consequences. How long do dermal fillers in the face last?
This question comes up frequently in my aesthetic practice. Dermal fillers in general can last 6 to 18 months depending on the type used. When it comes to lips particularly, they may not last as long as for example tear troughs (under eye dark circles). Commonly, first time clients of lip fillers may think that it does not last long. Your body tends to react to and metabolize the filler faster the first time an area is injected. On touch up injections, you'll find that the shape holds up longer and less filler is needed to obtain the same look. This is because your body forms its own collagen around the injected sites. Over time, you'll find that your lips maintain the new shape for a long time even without repeat injections. READ MORE
