  • How long after tooth extraction can I get a bridge?

Hi! It's typical to wait 6-8 weeks to allow the bone to recover and the gum tissue to stablize. Your gum tissue will typically recede and need time to stabilize and stop the recession. If a bridge is fabricated too soon before the gum tissue stablizes, you'll end up with a space underneath your pontic (false tooth). • Do you need anesthesia for a root canal?

Likely yes. Your nerve in the tooth is where the pain is felt. A root canal therapy procedure means you'll have the nerve taken out with dental instruments. • Do I need surgery to fix my wisdom tooth problems?

You should at least get these checked out. Wisdom teeth can cause a lot of damage to the "normal teeth" you use everyday to chew. Problems include resorption of adjacent teeth, possible cyst formation that can result in bone loss and other issues, localized bone loss (periodontal disease). Not all wisdom teeth need extractions, but they should all be properly evaluated at the very least. If you would like a follow-up to your question or concern, we would love to see you! • What helps with pain after tooth extraction?

Your doctor can prescribe you pain medications. A common prescription is a combination of Motrin and Tylenol. Narcotics can also be used but our profession is moving away from these for obvious reasons. Research has shown that Motrin and Tylenol have very similar pain-reducing qualities as narcotics. Steroids can also be prescribed to help with swelling and pain as well if the Motrin and Tylenol combination is not enough. • How long does gum pain last after tooth extraction?

Typically after 3-5 days your inflammation and pain should start to subside and ramp down. If you would like a follow-up to your question or concern, we would love to see you! • Can I get a filling on wisdom teeth?

Yes but it all starts with an evaluation. Not all wisdom teeth need to be extracted. If a patient wants to keep a wisdom tooth for the interim and hold off on extracting them, we can place a "bandaid" restoration to keep them longer until a patient is ready to have them extracted. • Can a loose crown be fixed?

Likely if the crown comes out in one piece, it could be recemented. If a crown is loose, have it evaluated immediately. Bacteria gets in between the tooth and crown and you'll have no way to clean this out...this can result in tooth loss and decay under the crown unless corrected soon. • Can a bad toothbrush cause gum recession?

Likely not. If you are referring to an old toothbrush, the bristles get "softer". This will result in more plaque build-up because you aren't cleaning the plaque off with a proper brush. This can then result in inflammation and recession of your gums. If you would like a follow-up to your question or concern, we would love to see you! • How can I fix a cracked tooth?

Hi! Tooth cracks can have a degree of severity. For example, a simple enamel fracture (a crack or fracture in just the enamel layer) can be easily fixed with a composite tooth colored bonding. A more severe crack, such as a vertical crack down the root may mean the tooth will have to be extracted or removed. It's important to correctly diagnose your tooth crack so the proper treatment can be indicated. I would suggest having this tooth examined first with a limited exam and x-rays (most insurances will cover this at 100%). READ MORE
