  • Is it normal for a crown to be sensitive?

Post operative symptoms following crown restorations can range in normal situations from no post op symptoms to non lingering (less than 30 seconds) slight to moderate sensitivity to hot and cold. Lingering and or severe sensitivity to hot and or cold and sensitivity to biting/chewing can be signs of a more ominous problem such as irreversible pulpitis and apical periodontitis. Both of which are indications of a need of root canal therapy. READ MORE

  • Do crowns on front teeth look natural?

Yes, with the new materials crown restorations can look much more natural than the older less aesthetic crowns of the past. READ MORE

  • Can a dental cleaning whiten teeth?

Yes, with most people's diet today, there are a lot of foods and drinks that create a substantial amount of extrinsic (external surface) stains that are removed with a normal, routine cleaning. In addition, smoking creates significant staining. READ MORE

  • Are dental implants long-lasting?

As of now there 10 yr prognosis stands around 90% success rate. There are many that have lasted longer and doing quite well. There are others that have failed in shorter term, but currently in low numbers. So, as of now they appear to be a long lasting restoration. READ MORE

  • Are zirconia crowns more expensive than porcelain?

The answer to this question depends on a couple of factors. Porcelain crowns can be fabricated with non precious metals, in which case they probably would be by maybe 10%. Low gold or high gold metals they would be same or less depending the practice you go to. READ MORE

  • What foods can't you eat with dentures?

There is nothing specifically prohibited as far as eating food with dentures compared to natural teeth. You don' want to chew ice with either. you should be very cautious with eating harder foods-nuts and such. You are not likely to be able to eat corn on the cob or apples and such from an ability to perform the required task point. Trying to eat them in the normal manner can dislodge or break front teeth or the denture. But cutting them up and eating in another manner works just fine READ MORE

  • How long does a dental CT scan take?

In referencing "dental ct", I believe you would probably be referring to a dental CBCT (cone beam computed tomography). The dental cbct only takes usually 7-30 seconds. This is done in dental offices equipped with the newer CBCT units and is much quicker than a CT, which is usually done at an imaging center. READ MORE

  • Do braces stain your teeth?

No. You can, however, develop stained areas around the brackets if you do not practice good oral health home care: flossing and brushing well prior to bedtime and after meals, drinking water between meals, avoiding sticky, high carb, and sugary foods and snacks. READ MORE

  • What are the long-term affects of teeth grinding?

Unfortunately, tooth grinding, or bruxism as it's technically known, can be quite extensive and severe if left undiagnosed and treated. We have seen many cases where teeth have been worn to jagged or smooth nubs. Precipitating the need for root canals and extensive reconstructive dental treatments. Also leading to significant TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) issues. READ MORE

  • Is surgery the only option for treating TMJ?

Surgery for TMJ or more correctly TMD (temporo-mandibular -disfunction) should be the last choice of treatment options. Unfortunately surgery has only a 50% success rate. All other non surgical options should be explored and optimal choices attempted. Physical therapy, splint therapies. One minimally invasive surgery option that has had some sucess is arthroscopy. Originally designed as a investigative option to see what the problem may be. Some surgeons report improvement in patients following just this procedure. READ MORE

  • How do you fix spacing between teeth?

There are multiple options available to treat spacing. Which one to use depends on the specific patient presentation and desires. Options - braces, chairside veneers, porcelain veneers, crowns. The first step as always is an exam and consult with your dentist. If you are not sure following this, then a second opinion might be a good choice. READ MORE

  • What is the best option for replacing a missing tooth?

Replacing a tooth is unfortunately not a one size fits all best worst situation. You need to see a dentist for an evaluation to develop a best plan for you. READ MORE

  • How to handle wisdom tooth pain?

My first suggestion is to contact your treating surgeon (dentist/oral surgeon) and discuss the problem with him/her. Warm salt water rinses help. Swishing with and spitting alcohol free listerine can help. If you are able to, take ibuprofen 600mg no more than every six hours is the best pain medication for that type of pain. If you need more relief, then taking acetaminophen (if you can take it) as directed on the bottle with the ibuprofen or in between doses can also help. READ MORE

  • Why was I prescribed antibiotics after extraction?

Whenever you have a concern about why you are being prescribed a medication it is always best to ask the prescribing clinician with your concerns. As a non participant not directly involved with your case I can only speculate as to why an antibiotic may have been prescribed. There are many factors involved in deciding whether or not and what medication to prescribe in any case. All I can say is your treating clinician observed factors that warranted an antibiotic to help proper healing in your case. READ MORE

  • Is maxillofacial surgery used to treat jaw diseases?

  • Should my child have a pediatric dental consultation for fillings?

Absolutely, whether at a pediatric or general/family dentist. Dental caries (tooth cavities) is the most common disease among children needlessly causing pain and discomfort that is totally easily preventable and easily treated. As a result of dental caries, early tooth and space loss causes problems with proper eruption of adult teeth and proper jaw and facial development, which is guided by primary (baby) tooth retention and exfoliation (normal tooth shedding). • Is fluoride toothpaste safe?

Yes. The amount of fluoride contained in over-the-counter toothpaste on the head of a toothbrush is small to begin with. When brushing and after brushing, the excess is spit out. After brushing, most people rinse and spit the rinse out. Therefore, the amount of fluoride left that has not been absorbed into the teeth is minimal. Even if you don't rinse and only spit, the amount is still minimal - well below the safe limit. READ MORE

  • Can a small crack in my tooth heal on its own?

No. Teeth fractures do not heal on their own. They are inorganic crystalline enamel on the outside over an organic crystalline combination tissue that does repair itself to some extent. Dental restoration by a trained dental professional is the only way to repair a fractured tooth. READ MORE

  • Do dental implants ever fall out?

Yes. It is possible for dental imlpants to come out. They are subject to peri-implant disease which is the implant variation of periodontal disease (gum disease). It is different because implants are different than and secured different than teeth. Prevention is very similar to prevention of periodontal disease. Floss brush, regular visits to your dentist for check ups and preventive care. READ MORE
