Dr. Covington is a 2001 Norfolk State University (NSU) alumna and a Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences (DNIMAS) Scholar, who majored in biology with the goal of attending medical school. The DNIMAS Program is a highly successful and rigorous honors program for mathematics and science majors with the goal of producing highly capable graduates who can help address the severe shortage of minority scientists. The program also produces graduates capable of successfully entering and completing medical or other professional schools.
Dr. Covington states, “The education I received as a DNIMAS scholar provided a solid foundation for my future endeavors. It was during this time, that I sharpened my study habits and fostered lifelong relationships with other like-minded students and professionals in the NSU community.”
A 2005 graduate of Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS), Dr. Covington went on to perform her residency in Internal Medicine at the same educational venue. During her time at EVMS, Covington was awarded several scholarships, namely, the Florence Smith Scholarship, the Lewis-Gale Scholarship, and the Faculty Admissions Scholarship. She became board-certified in internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Dr. Covington attributes her accomplishments to her faith in God and support from her family. She is the daughter of Shirley Davis and the late William L. Davis, Sr. and is married to Brian Covington. They have two daughters, Olivia and Alexis.
