Dr. Juan Sanchez-Ramos is Professor of Neurology at the University of South Florida in Tampa where he holds the Helen Ellis Endowed Chair for Parkinson's Disease Research and is Director of the HDSA Center of Excellence for Huntington’s Disease. In addition to teaching and attending to patients with Movement Disorders, he directs a basic research laboratory with active projects in neurodegeneration, neurotoxicology and adult stem cell biology. He is also Medical Director of the Parkinson Research Foundation based in Sarasota FL. He has a long-standing interest in ethnopharmacology and has published on the use of banisterine in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, collaborated on research on the possible medicinal applications of ibogaine and was an Investigator in the NIDA-sponsored compassionate use of Cannabis protocol. Presently his newest research project focuses on development of nano carriers that can delivery nucleic acids from nose-to-brain. Unlike gene therapies for brain disorders that require neurosurgical direct intracerebral injection of viral vectors, this approach is non-invasive and allows for intermittent, chronic delivery of gene-silencing molecules.
