Understanding Anterior Hip Replacement and its Benefits over Traditional Approaches
Hip replacement is one of the most successful procedures in modern medicine. Nearly 400,000 hip replacements are performed each year in the United States. The traditional successes of total hip replacement (THR) are based on a foundation of extensive clinical research and long-term patient...
Can one reset a broken pelvis?
Depends on the type of fracture and its severity. Typically they do heal, but can take up to 12 weeks. Recovery is very dependent on the type of injury. READ MORE
Is playing tennis too often causing my elbow pain?
Possibly. Rest and ice and anti-inflammatories are a way to reduce the pain. By holding off on tennis, or playing less, it will give you insight if you are playing too frequently or possibly stroke mechanics are stressing your elbow. READ MORE
Should I See a Doctor for Chronic Joint Pain?
If you are requiring pain killers for the discomfort, then an evaluation is certainly warranted. You do not want to be on pain pills long-term, as they have significant side effects. The level of pain suggests that there is something worth evaluating and potentially treating. READ MORE
Can a bunion affect your knee?
Possibly, if the knee is compensating for a change in walking pattern or gait. Would suspect it would be a temporary knee discomfort, which resolves once the foot is addressed. READ MORE
How can I speed up tendonitis recovery?
Stretching, ice, anti-inflammatories, and avoiding aggravation are common methods of optimizing recovery. READ MORE
How long does it take for soft tissue to heal after hip replacement?
It varies per patient, per surgery, per technique, but in general, it can take 6-12 weeks for the soft tissues to heal after hip replacement. Patients often get stronger over the course of the first year after surgery. Minimally invasive surgery techniques, and anterior approach hip surgery may allow faster recoveries. READ MORE
My mother needs to have knee replacement surgery. Would she be in a lot of pain afterwards?
Knee replacement is a major surgery, and discomfort is involved during the rehabilitation process. The patient should be prepared to manage the discomfort and to achieve the rehab goals under the guidance of their surgeon. Multimodal pain management protocols have dramatically improved pain after knee replacement surgery so that patients can walk day of surgery and be home the day after surgery, or even the same day as surgery in some cases. READ MORE
My mother's hips are paining ever since she had the hip joint replacement surgery. Will this be permanent?
That is an unexpected result, and repeat evaluation, or second opinion would be warranted to make sure there is not a treatable cause of her continued pain. Workup would involve repeat xrays, possible lab work, physical exam. Evaluation sooner rather than later would be recommended to avoid it becoming a permanent problem. READ MORE
How is a knee cap replacement surgery done?
If you are referring to partial knee cap replacement, it is resurfacing of the kneecap, and placing a metal groove for it to glide in when the knee bends. It is only "part" of a total knee replacement, with a much faster recovery and does not prohibit a total knee replacement later if necessary. I perform a high volume of these procedures because in the right person they can do very well. A 40 minute procedure and home same day. READ MORE
My mother underwent a joint replacement surgery. How long will the recovery take?
Recovery from joint replacement can vary, depending on the physical health of the patient coming in to surgery. Typically, patients will get better and stronger for up to a year after joint replacement surgery, depending on their situation. READ MORE
partial vs full joint replacement
Partial knee replacement is addressing only one of the 3 compartments of the knee. In the properly selected patient, the results can be excellent. In some literature, even better than total knee replacement. However, the procedure is dependent on patient selection, and surgeon expertise. Otherwise, total knee replacement works very well also. Partial knee replacements can be converted to total knee replacement later, if necessary, but the goal is that it remains the one and only procedure, if at all possible. READ MORE
