Get to know Physiatrist Dr. Bryan J. O’Young, who serves patients in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A practiced physiatrist, Dr. O’Young is the Vice-Chair of Education, Chief of Outpatient Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Services, Chair of Education Committee, and Chair of Awards and Promotions Committee at Temple University Hospital - Main Campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He offers comprehensive care for spinal problems, conducting a thorough review of the patient to determine the best course of treatment for their pain.

As the chief clinical training site for the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, it is a teaching hospital where the latest procedures and techniques are pioneered and where students and other physicians come to learn.

Educated in the United States, Dr. O’Young received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Neuroscience from Northwestern University in 1985, and earned his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in 1989. He then went on to complete his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Metropolitan Hospital and the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics in 1993.

Licensed to practice medicine in Pennsylvania and New York, the doctor is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR). The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, he is an active member of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, the American Academy of Thermology, the Philippines Chinese American Medical Association, the Federation of Chinese American and Chinese Canadian Medical Societies, the Association of Academic Physiatrists, the Chinese American Medical Society, the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association, the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine, and the Sichuan Association of Rehabilitation Medicine.

On a professional level, Dr. O’Young serves as an attending physician at Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, and Chief of PM&R Outpatient Services at Geisinger Health System.

In addition to his clinical roles, he serves as a Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine, Adjunct Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College at Cornell University, Adjunct Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, Visiting Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Peking University School of Medicine, Visiting Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Capital Medical University, Visiting Professor of Rehabilitation at the University of the East College of Medicine, Consultant in the Experts Committee West China University Hospital, Sichuan University, Visiting Professor/Honorary Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Sun-yat Sen University College of Medicine, and Visiting Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Electric Power Hospital, Capital Medical University.

In the past, Dr. O’Young has held hospital privileges at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, NYU Downtown Hospital, and Geisinger Medical Center. He also served as the Medical Director of PM&R at NYU Downtown Hospital, Medical Director of International Rehabilitation Medicine at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, NYU Langone Medical Center, and Medical Director of Physiatric Pain Management at Geisinger Health System.

Among his prior academic appointments, he served as an Instructor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Clinical Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine, and Clinical Associate Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. Physiatrists treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

As a testament to his success, Dr. O’Young has been the recipient of the Salutatorian Mathematics Association of America Award by Niles North High School (1981), Social Studies Departmental Award by Niles North High School (1981), Biology Departmental Award by Northwestern University (1985), Achievement Award by the Philippine Chinese American Medical Association (1996), Outstanding Youth Award by the Philippine Chinese American Association (1997), Award for Outstanding Educational Contribution by the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (1998), Outstanding Poster Award by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (1998), RIRM/John Gianutsos Award for Special Educational Contribution by the Rusk IRM/NYU Medical Center (2001, 2003, 2004, 2006), America’s Top Physicians Award by the Consumers Research Council of America (2003-2015), Distinguished Physician Award by the Philippine Chinese American Medical Association (2005) Educational/Clinical Service Award by the International Center for the Disabled (2005, 2006, 2007), Special Contribution Award by PCAMA (2007), NYU Rusk Without Walls Award for outstanding international educational contribution by the Rusk IRM,  NYU Medical Center (2009), Outstanding Paper Award by the Organizing Committee (Top 10-15%) by the 6th Beijing International Forum on Rehabilitation (2011),  Local Heroes Award for Outstanding Educational Contribution by the Federation of Chinese American and Chinese Canadian Medical Societies (2013), Haim Ring Award by the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (2013), and Certificate of Appreciation for Special Contribution to the American Academy of Thermology (2019).

A native of Manila, Philippines, he currently resides in Lower Gwynedd, Pennsylvania.
