  • Can fibromyalgia be cured?

NO--fibromyalgia is NOT curable. But, in many people it runs its course in a few years and can markedly improve or even disappear. Until then, one must stick to the lifestyle modifications that may help(sleep, rest, exercise, stresss mgmt, etc) and maybe take medications like acetominophen, NSAIDS, amitryptaline, pregabalin, and/or low dose opiates for really severe piain. • Can you get pregnant if you have sex the day after your period?

It lowers your odds of getting pregnant, but the "rhythm method" is certainly NOT failsafe! READ MORE

  • How can I ease insomnia?

The concept of dealing with chronic insomnia is "sleep hygiene," and there is a lot written on sleep hygiene that you could easily find online. But it includes the following examples: 1) avoid watching TV, bright lights, computer use before bed 2) exercise earlier in the day on a regular basis(ie--as little as 30 minutes of walking a day will help--but avoid strenuous activity just before going to bed 3) avoid CAFFEINE after 12 noon(ie--coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc) 4) use the bedroom ONLY for sleep and sex(ie--and NOT for TV watching and computer use) 5) stress/anxiety management/relief as stress/anxiety(and depression too) can cause insomnia 6) avoid taking daytime naps 7) you could try things like melatonin -- which is "natural," very safe, and works about half the time to some degree -- and antihistamines like Benadryl (but I would NOT take these drugs every night -- but only 2-4 times a week as I have noted reduced effect if taken every night 8) if none of these work, an evaluation for psychologic causes, sleep apnea, or other underlying "medical" causes may help. Sleeping pills are commonly prescribed, but they all have side effects, can lead to habituation, and can lead to falling, cognitive impairment, and reduced life expectancy in people over the age of 60-65. They need to be avoided if at all possible. Lastly, A visit to a really knowledgeable Internal Medicine specialist or Sleep expert may help find a solution. READ MORE

  • Is acne a permanent condition?

Acne is common in teenagers going through puberty when sex hormones are starting to be secreted by the sex organs (i.e., testicles and ovaries), thus it tends to be worst during the teen years and then lessens thereafter. If it is severe, a visit to the dermatologist will get him started on the right treatment and will usually reduce or eliminate the pimples and help prevent facial scarring, which can be permanent. • What are the best exercises for lower back pain?

  • Can diabetes be detected with blood test?

  • Are calcium deposits in the uterus normal?

  • Would I need stents after a heart attack?

If you have a significant blockage that is STILL causing ISCHEMIA (i.e., angina or other signs of reduced blood flow through a particular blocked coronary artery), you may well need a stent and/or anti-ischemia medication (i.e., medicine that improves coronary blood flow and reduces the likelihood of having a blood clot at the site of the coronary blockage). • Is it possible for a heart attack to go unnoticed?

Absolutely! It is called a "silent MI". and either means there is NO symptom (like chest pain) of it noticed by the patient, OR the symptoms(s) are not thought "typical" of a heart attack (i.e., no real chest pain, but may have sweats, fatigue, SOB, nausea, weakness, etc.), which are overlooked by the patient (and sometimes even the doctor) and may be attributed to a viral illness, a GI problem, or some other non-cardiac condition. And, unless an EKG, ECHOCARDIOGRAM, or CARDIAC enzymes are done, a heart attack (MI--myocardial infarction) may go unnoticed. READ MORE

  • Can melatonin help me sleep better?

Yes, melatonin MAY help. In my experience, it is about "50-50" whether it will help patients sleep better. Also, some people think that LOWER DOSES (i.e., 1/2-1mg) may work better than the standard doses sold in drug stores (3, 5, or 10mg pills). So, I would try 0.3-1mg doses first and work up slowly from there. And I would also suggest taking it only 3-5 nights a week and giving it a couple nights off. But, ONLY by trying it in variable doses and frequencies can one find out if it will help or not. But it does take some experimenting to find the correct dose. READ MORE

  • What is diverticulitis?

Diverticuli are small out-pouchings in the wall of the colon. Having multiple of these out-pouchings is called diverticulosis. But when colonic matter and bacteria get lodged in these out-pouchings and plug them up, an infection may result. This is called diverticulitis, and frequently requires antibiotics for resolution. • Can you live a normal life after a heart attack?

Yes, the quality of cardiac care has improved so much recently that patients can live a normal life if the heart function remains fairly normal and the blood flow to the heart muscle is well preserved. But most patients who have had a proven heart attack will need to be on medication (usually very well tolerated) and have tests run to find out what the heart function is and how well the blood flow to the heart muscle has been preserved. • How is a thyroid test performed?

It is a very simple blood test that measures T4 (thyroid hormone) and TSH (the pituitary hormone) that stimulates the thyroid to produce thyroid hormone (T4). If your T4 is low and the TSH is high, this is diagnostic of the most common type of hypothyroidism (where the thyroid stops producing thyroid hormone -- an autoimmune syndrome called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis). The treatment is very simple and effective and involves taking one daily dose of T4 (thyroid hormone) and then later measuring the levels of your T4 and TSH. Once these are normalized and your symptoms have resolved, then you will continue taking this set does of thyroid hormone for the rest of your life. READ MORE

  • Is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease fatal?

It is only occasionally fatal. READ MORE

  • How can I lower my cholesterol level?

Other than by taking medications (which can be very effective) to lower the cholesterol level, weight loss is the most effective, but also cutting down on animal fats (meat, eggs, cheese, etc.) and exercising may help reduce cholesterol. READ MORE

  • What's the best treatment for nerve pain?

First. You must differentiate a peripheral neuropathy from a cervical spine lesion that can cause bilateral hand symptoms. An MRI would show any Cspine issue and sometimes nerve conduction tests are needed to differentiate peripheral nerve issues from Cspine radiculopathies. BIt if you really do have a peripheral neuropathy, you must be evaluated to see if you have a TREATABLE neuropathy(like B12 deficiency, hypothyroidism, diabetes, toxins/heavy metals, etc etc) But If you do NOT have anything that can be diagnosed and reversed, then you can try medicines like gabapenrin or Lyrica and see if it helps.
