Board-Certified Surgeon Dr. McCarthy Pioneers Advances in Reconstructive Surgery and Patient Safety

Dr. McCarthy, a distinguished plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, is setting new standards in the field of reconstructive surgery. Specializing in reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery, microsurgery, and oncologic reconstruction, she prioritizes understanding her patients’ goals and expectations. Her patient-centered approach ensures that each individual receives personalized care that aligns with their preferences while achieving optimal surgical outcomes.

Board-certified in plastic surgery, her journey to excellence began with her medical degree from McMaster University, followed by residencies in plastic surgery at the University of British Columbia and a fellowship in reconstructive surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. 

Beyond her clinical work, Dr. McCarthy is dedicated to advancing patient safety and outcomes in the field of plastic surgery. Serving as the co-chair of the National Breast Implant Registry and the Principal Investigator of the PROFILE Registry, she leads initiatives to evaluate and enhance the safety of breast implants.

Additionally, she is a key figure in the international Global Network for Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), contributing her expertise to a global effort to address this rare disease.

As a representative of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons on the American College of Surgeons’ National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, Dr. McCarthy continues to advocate for patient safety and quality care. Her recent involvement in evaluating the safety and efficacy of a tissue mesh in postmastectomy implant reconstruction underscores her dedication to advancing the field of reconstructive surgery.

With over 100 scientific papers and book chapters to her name, she is a respected authority in the field, sought after for lectures both nationally and internationally.
