  • What should I do after dental implant surgery?

It is always a very good idea to ask your surgeon and your restoring dentist. I suggest to rinse with warm water & salt. After 24 hours, use a soft toothbrush with little or no toothpaste, keep the area clean. Do not eat hard or irritating food like spicy salsa or acidic food. No lemon or tomatoes. Make sure you eat protein (eggs, chicken, fish). Many times, a pain medication is indicated. Ice pack in the area is a good idea (4 minutes every half hour). Make sure you check allergies before you take any medication. READ MORE

  • Can I use mouth wash after getting a dental implant?

Ask your surgeon. I recommend to avoid mouth wash that contains alcohol. I like my patients to use a mouth wash that contains 0.12% Chlorhexiddine such as Perio Guard. Two tablespoons on the affected area, rinse for 45 seconds twice a day for one week. READ MORE

  • Can I exercise after dental implant surgery?

A crown that is designed properly AND the Patient takes good care by brushing correctly, flossing properly and avoiding sticky foods ,can last 30+ years. In many cases the patient has been neglectful and that is one powerful reason why the crown was needed in the first place. Dentists make a replacement for the patient who needs a crown. Today's materials and techniques are excellent, however remember that the oral cavity is always moist, full of microorganisms and in daily activity,if you add high temperature and lack of care , crowns will NOT last over 20 yrs. as intended. • What is a healing cap on a dental implant?

When implants are placed, most times the "abutment" (it is the stump that protrudes from the gum ) is NOT installed for many weeks. The implant is placed in your jaw bone and has a hole where the abutment will be placed, the healing cap protects that hole so the gum does not grow over it. The healing cap is removed and the abutment will be placed in a healthy gum that surrounds your implant. READ MORE

  • How are veneers applied to your teeth?

Veneers are "tile like" porcelain teeth that are placed over the front part of your teeth. Dentists use a technique that requires him to ETCH the enamel outer surface of teeth (like etching glass) then an additional thin layer of adhesive is used finally a very strong composite is applied between your remaining tooth structure and the veneer . Ultra violet light hardens the composite and secures the veneer that must be polished properly. READ MORE

  • How is a crown removed from an implant?

The secret is to find out what cement was used to place the crown. Some crowns are attached to the implant with a tiny screw. Most are cemented. Sometimes a permanent cement is used and in this case you may have to destroy the crown as it is almost impossible to remove without damaging the implant. If a temporary cement was used it can be retrieved. READ MORE

  • Can front teeth get dental crowns?

In most cases all teeth can get a dental crown. Only if a tooth has a fracture that goes under the gum and reaches the bone, or if the tooth is mobile do to trauma or infection, then the tooth should be extracted and an implant can be placed prior to the new crown. READ MORE

SMOKING has several potential problem causing effects on implants. The constant irritation to gums, the toxins that smoking brings to the oral cavity by increasing the temperature, by upsetting the normal flora and bacterial balance and creating a constant negative where any slight irritation can become a bigger problem and eventual loss of the implant. • Is it normal for a crown to be sensitive?

There is no YES and NO answer. If the tooth had a deep cavity or the roots were exposed or there was a crack or fracture prior to placing the new crown, there could be sensitivity to cold. Sometimes when the crown is cemented there will be sensitivity for a few days. If the crown is not adjusted or has a high spot and it strikes the opposing tooth before all other teeth, yes there will be sensitivity. If it lasts over 10 days it could need a root canal treatment. Make sure to go back to your dentist before it get worse. READ MORE

  • How long will a new crown be sensitive?

Crowns will not be sensitive unless you had a very deep cavity or traumatic problem that was not improved significantly with a good temporary crown. Careful techniques to do the final cementation will minimize sensitiviry. Make sure the final crown is not hitting the opposing tooth before and it is fitting properly. READ MORE

If not, go back to see your dentist. READ MORE

Silver (amalgam alloy) fillings have been used in Dentistry for over a century. When done properly they will last 30 yrs +. The two critical times are when the fillings are placed and when they have to be retrieved to be re-placed. A rubber dam should be used to protect the patient and avoid saliva contamination while they are placed. READ MORE

The severity of the crack will determine treatment. Many times an ONLAY is a good choice. This procedure is a partial crown that covers and protects most of the tooth and saves the front and or back part of the tooth while strengthening and protecting all cusps. Maybe you will need a full crown. Sometimes a root canal treatment (Endodontia) is needed. READ MORE
