What causes a heart to have a hole?
Usually, this is related to a congenital defect. Basically you were born with this. Small defects can be found in the top chambers, the atria, called patent foramen ovales. Sometimes larger defects in the atria are diagnosed called atrial septal defects. The bottom chambers can have defects as well called ventricular septal defects. Sometimes during a heart attack, a defect in the ventricular wall could develop. These defects can be diagnosed on exam leading to an echocardiogram which is a sound wave picture of the heart. If severe, or symptoms are developing, surgery might be needed. Many are without symptoms and are found incidentally. READ MORE

Increasing resting heart rate, what is it?
Many physiologic conditions can increase heart rate. Stressors like dehydration, pain, anemia, infection, overactive thyroid, and the list is extensive. An abnormal heart rhythm can present like this as well. A complete physical and appropriate testing would be a great place to start. JMarcum MD READ MORE
Will my hip replacement put me at risk for heart disease?
Hip surgery will be a short term stressor to the body. Any stress puts a heart at some risk. Cigarettes, diabetes, high cholesterol, a diet rich in animal-based protein and fat, lack of exercise, mental stress, lack of sleep; the list goes on. The longer the stress continues, the greater the risk. Hip surgery will cause pain and there might be some blood loss. These are all short-term risks. Having pain in the hip and not being able to move well are risks as well that may have more overall risk over time. If you are not having active symptoms of heart disease, the surgery might lower risk over the long haul if there are no complications. You will have less pain, exercise more, keep the weight off, sleep better, and feel happier. These factors in my opinion would help your heart risk long term. Nothing is risk free. Obtain opinions of others, pray, and be well informed. I hope this answer helps. My prayers are with you. JMarcum MD READ MORE
