Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Utpal K. Bhanja, who serves patients in Gallipolis, Ohio.

A seasoned hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Bhanja is affiliated with the Holzer Center for Cancer Care in Gallipolis, Ohio. He provides all aspects of cancer care including administration of chemotherapy and biologicals in the office setting, emergency care, bone marrow biopsies, supportive and palliative care. He can also be found on staff at Holzer Athens and Holzer Jackson.

A 1982 graduate of the University of Calcutta Medical College in India, Dr. Bhanja went on to further his training in the United States, completing his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in hematology and medical oncology at the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1990 and 1992, respectively.

Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in hematology, medical oncology, and internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

In order to remain at the forefront of his challenging field, he is an active member of several professional societies and associations, including the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Medical Association, the Indo-American Cancer Association, the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, the American Society of Hematology, and the Ohio State Medical Association.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, and a rare hematologic related syndromes, and diseases.

Speaking several languages, Dr. Bhanja is fluent in English, Hindi, and Bengali.
