Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Ricardo Carter, who serves patients in Lewistown, Pennsylvania.

An established hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Carter has been in private practice in Lewistown, Pennsylvania since 1991. He offers oncology and hematology evaluation and diagnosis, as well as clinical trials through Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group.

Some of the services that he provides at his practice include 24-Hour chemotherapy on ambulatory pumps for home chemotherapy, biotherapy, cancer clinical trials, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, immunotherapy, and iron therapy. 

“Our mission is to provide state-of-the-art treatments in a community setting for patients with cancer and blood disorders. This practice works with other major medical centers to provide a coordinated team approach to your treatment. We believe in the importance of continuity of care for our patients so we provide twenty-four hour inpatient and outpatient care provided by a physician” as stated on his website. 

Back in 1981, Dr. Carter graduated from the University of Xochicalco School of Medicine in Mexico. He then relocated to the United States, performing his residency in internal medicine at Lutheran Medical Center in 1985, and his fellowship in hematology and oncology at Jamaica Plain VA Medical Center in 1988.

On a professional level, he is an active member of the American College of Physicians, and is affiliated with Geisinger Medical Center.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, and a rare hematologic related syndromes, and diseases.
