Justin Burkett is an acupuncturist practicing in Nevada City, CA. He evaluates and treats patients based on the concepts of oriental medicine. Acupuncturists complete their evaluations by getting a patient history and looking at and touching the body. Then, they place very fine acupuncture needles into specific points on the body. Stimulating these points and nerves is how Dr. Burkett treats the patients condition. Many of the bodys systems respond to acupuncture, and it can treat physical pain as well as emotional stress.

Dizziness after acupuncture
Dizziness after acupuncture happens. It happens for a few reasons. One is that blood sugar can drop with acupuncture, which is why it's important to not go for acupuncture on an empty stomach. (not full, but not completely empty) Another can be related to your ears not draining properly. Neck Tension can certainly be related to blockage to proper drainage of the Eustachian Tubes, as can jaw tension.=20 Acupuncture is generally safe, and it's rare to see permanent damage. It sounds like the dizziness has been going on since before you got the acupuncture. I would advise you to follow up with the acupuncturist who treated you. A lot of times these symptoms can be reversed with auriculotherapy, which is a treatment that uses the outside of the ear. That can even be done with no needles, using electrostatic and ear seeds. There can also be issues in your liver and gallbladder system in your spleen/stomach system, in your Heart / Small Intestine System even your Kidney / Bladder system; or your Lung / Large Intestine system that could be giving you dizziness. It's really impossible to properly diagnose and treat over a forum such as this, but I wouldn't give up hope. Oh, and can certainly feel weird, like an electrical buzzy feeling, in fact, some practitioners contend that qi IS electric. So if the needles allowed more blood and qi to flow up to the head that could account for the buzzy weird feeling. I hope this helps. READ MORE
Is it bad to move during acupuncture?
Of course, like all things Chinese Medicine, it depends. What type of movement are you talking about? Small contractions to stimulate the needles, maybe okay. Bigger movements that can possible bend or break a needle, yeah, that's bad. One of the great benefits of Acupuncture is that it seems to open up a portal to sensations of the Dao. The emptiness that underlies all reality. Finding stillness is an invitation to the profound. READ MORE
How does acupuncture help relieve stress?
Hello. Acupuncture treats stress in a variety of ways. We can talk in terms of traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or we can talk in the language of neurobiology. Either way, there is a therapeutic effect. In terms of TCM, Stress is considered primarily as a stagnation of Liver Qi. And depending on the effect of that stagnation on other systems, you will get a variety of symptoms. The liver acts as a kind of reservoir for blood and has a regulatory effect. For example let's look at muscle tension as a result of stress. If the liver qi is stagnant then the blood won't flow freely, then overworked muscles won't be getting new fresh blood as readily and there will be accumulation of muscular waste products and the muscles will fatigue and tighten up. This leads to an increase in the pressure that the heart needs to pump that blood through. Acupuncture to address the liver qi and the affected muscles leads to good results. From a biomedical perspective acupuncture causes the release of endorphins, serotonin, dopamine and other signaling molecules. It has normalizing effects on the autonomic nervous system (I e; " fight or flight " response is turned down. And in general acupuncture seems to help the body communicate within itself more effectively. The felt experience from a patients perspective is often a sense of ease and lihhtness in their body, a kind of clarity of mind and a feeling of hope and happiness. READ MORE
Relieving pain with acupuncture?
Acupuncture relieves pain in a number of ways. One of the early observations about acupuncture and pain relief was that acupuncture stimulates the endorphins system. These are the bodies morphine-like substances. There is also pain relief due to a neurological effect called "gating." By giving a signal through the acupuncture point, the brain selectively process this new signal, rather than the pain signal. On another level, acupuncture causes muscles to relax, and a body at ease will be less painful. At a certain point, the acupuncture experience initiates what is called a non-specific healing response. Getting out of pain is only the beginning; you must learn how to stay out of pain by changing the patterns that give rise to the pain, and this is where the lifestyle and dietary counsel of an acupuncturist can be beneficial. Areas of research
I'm very interested in the interface of Mind and body. How are thoughts and behaviors manifest in the body.
To this end I'm studying and working with Binaural Beats Audio files and I'm looking to do deeper research into EEG and acupuncture.
