Should I get a second opinion before plastic surgery?
We encourage patients to get more than one opinion. Make sure that you are seeing Board Certified Plastic Surgeons or Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeons. Ask questions during the consultation. Bring photos of your desired result. I would suggest getting at least 3 opinions. Do not rush into surgery. READ MORE
What is a mommy makeover?
A "mommy makeover" is simply more than one procedure, usually a breast procedure and an abdominal procedure to correct the effects of having children. It depends on the patient. It could range from liposuction of the abdomen to a tummy tuck to correct a muscle bulge from pregnancy. Breast procedures could range from a lift, to implants, or both. You should have a consultation with a plastic surgeon that is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. We actually encourage patients to visit more than one board certified plastic surgeon. A "board certified cosmetic surgeon" does not have the same credentials as a board certified plastic surgeon. The American Board of Plastic Surgery Inc, is the only organization recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. These members must complete a full general surgery residency of 5 years after medical school and then a 2-3 year plastic surgery residency before taking oral and written boards. They must retake their board exam every 10 years. "Board Certified Cosmetic Surgeons" do not have to complete ANY surgical training. They simply pay a fee to join as this is not a certification recognized or monitored by the American Board of Medical Specialties. I understand that was a lot of extra information, but you need to check out your surgeon's credentials. My first priority is educating patients. Marla Jones, RN READ MORE
Is it a must to undergo a plastic surgery after a Mohs surgery?
If the skin cancer was not covered with a flap or skin graft, it may be improved with scar revision or flap. One would just need to have a board-certified plastic surgeon see the patient to evaluate her and see if it can be improved. Sometimes Mohs surgeons leave the hole from the skin cancer removal open to heal by itself, which sometimes causes poor scarring. Thanks Ralph F Cozart, MD READ MORE
