Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. J. Gregory Jones, who serves patients in Macon, Georgia.

Dr. Jones, a seasoned ophthalmologist, has been providing comprehensive eye care in Macon, Georgia for more than thirty years through his private practice, J. Gregory Jones MD. 

Originating in 1986 when Dr. Jones took over Dr. John O. Martin’s ophthalmology practice, his commitment to excellence in eye care and surgery has remained steadfast. Today, his practice stands as one of the select practices in middle Georgia providing advanced laser treatments for cataracts and glaucoma, ensuring comprehensive care for patients across the region.

Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dr. Jones grew up in small towns in Georgia and Florida. In high school, he was student conductor of the band and played the trombone as a solo artist. 

Graduating from the University of Florida for his undergraduate studies, Dr. Jones pursued his Medical Degree at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. His medical training included an internship in internal medicine at the Baptist Hospitals in Birmingham, Alabama, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at the Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham.

Showcasing his commitment to excellence in the field, Dr. Jones is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

Furthermore, Dr. Jones proudly served his country as a United States Air Force veteran, fulfilling a four-year tenure as a flight surgeon in Charleston, South Carolina, and later overseas in Guam. His diverse experiences contribute to his well-rounded approach to patient care and his dedication to serving both his community and his country.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.

Happily married, Dr. Jones and his wife, Jenny, have five children and seven adorable grandchildren. Spending time with his family and attending church hold a special place in his heart. 

Beyond his medical profession, Dr. Jones finds solace in the skies as an instrument-rated pilot, often taking to the air in his own airplane during leisure moments. Additionally, his passion for music extends throughout his lifetime, finding joy in both playing and composing music.
