I am experiencing tachycardia after having heavy bleeding during my menstrual cycle. What should I do?
The chances are that you are anemic (low red blood cell count and hemoglobin). These are the oxygen carrying components of our blood. When hemoglobin is low from ongoing blood loss, less oxygen is delivered to our organs and cells and the heart has to pump faster to make up for it- it is a natural reflex, a response to the anemia. I advise you to speak to your primary care MD and your Gynecologist about the cause of your heavy menses, how to manage it and possibly starting iron supplements. Hope this is a helpful starting point but following the guidance of your doctor is most important. READ MORE
Can gaining weight put me at risk for cardiac arrest?
Weight is just one of several risk factors. Being overweight may be associated with other risk factors that increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. My advice is to see your doctor and discuss your risk factors and any options you have to lower your chances for heart disease. READ MORE
Are there any risk factors for a stroke?
In general, the risk factors for heart attack or stroke include: high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking and family history. There are other rare predispositions but the ones outlined are the most common. Chronic stress may elevate blood pressure and impact sleep as well. It is always a good idea to see your primary doctor once a year to see where you stand. READ MORE
Why do I have palpitations?
The cause for your symptoms may be something benign, but arrhythmias should be ruled out. I suggest you see a cardiologist for an evaluation. READ MORE
