    This certainly can already be an infection, and it can definitely spread, with extra risk because you are a diabetic. You should see a doctor ASAP to get it cultured, find out what antibiotics or herbs the infection is sensitive to, get put on local and internal anti-microbial therapy as determined appropriate, and be sure your diabetes is under control.     Get her to a dermatologist or other doctor ASAP to have it cultured, drained if necessary, and treated with antimicrobials, if necessary. Hot soaks may help, but from your description, it should be evaluated right away. READ MORE

    That really depends on the kind of infection, and the state of your immune system. Since your system is already compromised by diabetes, there is risk that a bacterial infection can spread locally and along the fascia (cellulitis) or even through the lymphatics or blood stream to other parts of your body in a dangerous way.
