Academically, after receiving degrees in Biology and Radiography, he made the decision to enter the field of nursing. Upon completion of his nursing degree, he practiced in several facilities in Texas. Wanting to further his education, he moved to California and graduated with his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in 1999, and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Greenwich Hospital in 2002.
Recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (DFASAM), the doctor is board-certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM), which provides assurance to the American public that addiction medicine physicians have the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and treat addiction.
In good standing with a number of professional organizations, Dr. Harris II is an active member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the Arizona Society of Addiction Medicine, the California Society of Addiction Medicine, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Osteopathic Association of Addiction Medicine, the American Legion, the Military Officers Association of America, and the Arizona State Physicians Association.
Prior to becoming an osteopathic physician, he was not only employed in other areas of the medical field, but also served in the United States Air Force and retired with the rank of Captain.
Addiction medicine is a medical subspecialty that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, evaluation, treatment, and recovery of persons with addiction, of those with substance-related and addictive disorders, and of people who show unhealthy use of substances including alcohol, nicotine, prescription medicine and other illicit and licit drugs. An addiction medicine physician provides prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment services for patients with unhealthy substance use or substance-related health conditions.
