  • Is it advisable to wear knee pads while running?

If the purpose of the "pads" is to align the joint motion, specifically to keep the kneecap sliding vertically within a groove as it should, there is questionable value. If the purpose is to prevent injury when you fall down and strike the front of your knee against the ground, there is probably little or no value. Otherwise there is absolutely no purpose to wearing anything around your knees when running. READ MORE

  • My husband had a ligament tear and the blood spread inside the knee. What are the repercussions?

There is little or no future problem from the blood, especially after having had a procedure to remove it. The question you need answered, however, is whether there will be future problems from the torn ligament and any associated cartillage damage. The answer depends partly upon details of the ligament tear and partly upon what are your husbands age and level of sport participation. That question cannot be answered except by the physician caring for his injury who knows the complete history of the injury, findings on initial and subsequent physical examinations, and results of imaging studies. • Should PT be recommended in any sport for any age?

You should follow the same recommendations as everyone else, including regular follow-up at least once a year with your primary care physician to assess your general health and fitness. At that encounter ask all your questions regarding sport participation. If there are questions that your PCP cannot answer, consider seeing a sports medicine specialist. You need to see a physical therapist only if your physician determines that doing so is necessary for management of a problem. READ MORE

  • Is it advisable for a heavier person to start weight lifting?

Weight lifting done incorrectly is always harmful and weight lifting done correctly is always helpful. It is your trainers job to make sure you are doing it correctly. You should begin with small weights and fewer repetitions, and increase gradually. Use proper technique. It is always a routine recommendation that a healthy person over 45 years of age should have evaluation by your primary care physician prior to significantly increasing physical activity. See your PCP earlier if there are specific factors that increase risk of heart attack such as smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or family history of heart attack or stroke at age younger than 50. • Can I use a compression wrap for a wrist injury?

Several types of injury may result from falling on your hand. One in particular, fracture of the scaphoid bone, may result in chronic disability if not diagnosed and treated on a timely basis. Pain from a scaphoid fracture is located on the thumb side of the wrist. See your primary care physician without delay if you have that symptom. Otherwise most wrist injuries gradually improve with time and benefit from partial rest. A non-compression wrap or splint is helpful if it enforces partial rest. In the first 1-3 days, a compression wrap may be helpful to limit swelling. There is no other benefit from compression and after 2-3 days there is absolutely no benefit at all from compression. Pain that has not been improving and completely resolved by two weeks after injury needs evaluation by your primary care physician. READ MORE

  • How are pulled muscles treated while lifting weights?

Use cold packs for no more than 20 minutes once an hour over the first 1-5 days. Do not use heat. Limit painful exercise to the amount that you can perform without pain. Continue all other exercise as normal. As pain improves, gradually increase the exercise that you have been limiting. After 10-15 days if you are still not able to do unlimited exercise without pain, see your primary care physician to determine if the injury is more than a pulled muscle. READ MORE

  • How can I manage my blood sugar while running?

The answer to this question involves maintaining relatively constant daily exercise or changing your daily exercise very gradually, changes in eating prior to exercise and after exercise, and adjustment of your medicine(s). For every diabetic runner, the care needs to be individualized. All of these considerations need to be discussed between you and the physician managing your diabetes on an ongoing basis in order to keep your diabetes always under good control and avoid low blood sugar during and after exercise. • How can I increase my strength to play cricket?

Like all sports, playing cricket and softball benefits from upper body, lower body, and core strength. A personal trainer or athletic trainer is the best professional to evaluate where you are strong and where you are weak, and design an individualized exercise regime to correct weaknesses. Muscles exist in pairs with one muscle performing the opposite function as its pair. The strengthening regime needs to restore the proper balance in these muscle pairs. Doing so will reduce the risk of injury and improve performance. READ MORE
