Yes, it is possible, although with testicular cancer, often chemotherapy is added in the event there are cancer cells in his system outside the testicle that can't be seen with tests or imaging. Can cancer cells be removed surgically?
While surgery does not remove individual cells, tumors which are growths comprised of millions of cells are removed with surgery. We believe that many patients may have individual cells in their system after surgery and that is why patients are often given chemotherapy for a period of time after surgery. Get to know Surgical Oncologist Dr. Shaun P. McKenzie, who serves the Lexington, Kentucky area at Lexington Surgical Specialists. He completed nine years of surgical specialty training and has been in practice nearly 10 years. Experience: After obtaining his Medical Degree, Dr. McKenzie completed his surgery internship, general surgery residency and research fellowship with the University of Kentucky. He then went on to complete a fellowship in surgical oncology at City of Hope National Medical Center with an emphasis on liver, pancreas and gastroesophageal cancers. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery. To remain up to date in his field he remains a professional member for the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, the International Hepatopancreaticobiliary Association, and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. Current Position: Dr. McKenzie practices with the Lexington Surgical Specialists and is the Medical Director for Oncology Services at Baptist Health Lexington. Surgical Oncology: Surgical oncology is the use of surgery to treat cancer. The field of surgical oncology focuses on integrating the role of surgical removal of tumors into the multi-specialty treatment of cancers. For most solid cancers, surgery remains the only potential treatment for cure, but can also be utilized to extend life and palliate cancer related symptoms. Personal: Dr. McKenzie is married with three children and spends his free time with his family. His hobbies include hiking, hunting and fishing and rafting.
