In the past, he has worked in several countries including Pakistan, Iran, Canada, and Sweden in the fields of medicine and neuroscience. Before starting his practice, he held a faculty position at the University of Florida. He has also worked in other famous universities in the past including the University of Uppsala (Sweden), University of Alberta (Canada), University of Texas (Houston) and the Kansas University Medical Center. Dr. Farooque completed his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. In addition to his M.D., he holds a Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience, from the Uppsala University in Sweden.

He has over 50 publications in well reputed international journals in the area of neuroscience. His present research interests include the psychopathophysiology of schizophrenia and addiction. Some of his past research interests include pathophysiology of CNS injury, e.g. neuroinflammation, neuronal death, excitotoxicity, free radicals, and edema. He has presented his original works in several international conferences around the world in countries such as Sweden, Germany, France, UK, Canada, South Korea, and the USA. He has been actively involved in the teaching and mentoring of both M.D. and Ph.D. students in the past. His studies in the above fields have been cited and reproduced by several groups around the world.
