A renowned expert in the medical and surgical management of vitreoretinal diseases, Dr. Lakhanpal is a Partner at The Retina Care Center. He provides retinal consultative services in Westminster, Glen Burnie, Pikesville, and North Point offices in Maryland.

Founded by Eric P. Suan, M.D, The Retina Care Center specializes in caring for patients with eye problems specific to the retina. The doctors and staff members are committed to offering patients the most sophisticated and comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and the most current approved treatment for all retinal disorders.

Professionally, Dr. Lakhanpal is also a member of the medical staff of Timonium Surgical Center along with Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. He is passionate about delivering the best eye care available to his patients while keeping them well-informed and comfortable. 

With a broad educational background, he graduated with his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1995. He then went on to perform his residency in ophthalmology at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, serving as Co-Chief Resident. 

Prior to joining private practice, Dr. Lakhanpal completed a fellowship in medical retinal disease and research (Fletcher-Jones Foundation Grant) at Doheny Eye Institute, where he served as a Principal Investigator of the Doheny Digital Reading Center Diabetic Screening Studies. He then completed an additional fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.  

Appointed as one of the Top 150 Medical and Surgical Retina Innovators in North America by Ocular Surgery News, Dr. Lakhanpal began his career in 2006, ultimately serving as managing partner of Eye Consultants of Maryland. He is board-certified in ophthalmology through the American Board of Ophthalmology, an independent, nonprofit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists (eye physicians and surgeons) in the United States.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Retina Society, the American Society of Retina Specialists, Club Vit, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and the Vit-Buckle Society (founding member and current President).

A leader in the field of small gauge vitrectomy surgery, Dr. Lakhanpal continues to actively publish scientific articles, building on work he started 15 years ago under the leadership of Drs. Mark Humayun and Eugene DeJuan. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed publications in major scientific journals and has authored multiple textbook chapters. 

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract, glaucoma, and corneal surgery.
