Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Geoffrey B. Higgs, who serves patients in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Higgs is an experienced orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine injury with a broad experience taking care of professional and collegiate athletic programs across the full spectrum of athletics as well as taking care of the weekend warrior. He also has strong experience as a consultant with a demonstrated history of working in the medical device industry in medical device design, research, and intellectual property dispute resolution.

Since 2017, he has been serving as the Founder & CEO of International Orthopaedic Surgery Consultants in Dallas, Texas. The mission of the organization is to provide a high level of consulting expertise in the broadly defined sports medicine and orthopaedic space. 

Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Higgs graduated with his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1988. He then went on to perform his internship in general surgery, his postdoctoral fellowship, and his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Columbia University/Presbyterian Medical Center. He spent a year in a postdoctoral Orthopaedic Research Fellowship at University of California San Diego He subsequently completed another postdoctoral fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.

He is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

Dr. Higgs also served his country for 13 years as an Officer in the United States Army rising to the rank of Major and served several overseas tours of duty. He received multiple awards including the Meritorious Service Medal. 

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

As a testament to his success, Dr. Higgs has been the recipient of Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2020, 2018, 2016, 2015), Patients’ Choice Award (2020, 2018), Best Orthopaedic Surgeon Awards (2011, 2015, 2017, 2021) and On-Time Doctor Award (2020). He has also been widely published in medical literature and has lectured at numerous national and international meetings.
