Can you get a cavity under a crown?
Yes, you can get a cavity anywhere you have natural tooth structure. This includes under a crown, which can be difficult to detect, especially if you've had a root canal! It's best to floss, brush, and rinse regularly. If you have a history of cavities, it's best to be mindful of any foods containing sugar and /or acid (those conditions feed the cavity bacteria). Sincerely, Dr. Reiser READ MORE
What is a dental bridge?
When a tooth is missing, we recommend an implant, bridge, or partial. The implant looks and acts like a natural tooth. The bridge goes from the tooth in front to the tooth behind the space. This would be reasonable if an implant is contra- indicated, but it does remove natural tooth structure...and can be difficult to keep clean. A partial is a good option, especially if multiple teeth are missing. It is removable and needs to be left out 6+ hours per day. Most people leave them out overnight. Hopefully this helps! Why is my tooth discolored after treatment?
When you have a root canal done, the tooth is considered to be "dead" and can cause discoloration. You can have an internal bleaching done if there isn't much tooth structure missing. Or, you can have a porcelain crown made that would make it look more natural. I hope that helps! Sincerely, Dr. Reiser READ MORE
What happens if I don't go for my root canal?
It depends on the reason for needing the root canal. If there is an infected root, eventually it will get worse and can be painful if the infection spreads. If you were in pain, and the doctor gave you some medication, that medicine does not get rid of the 'cause' for the pain it just masks it for a little while. The pain will return when the medicine wears off. Another option would be to have your tooth removed and to then consider an implant, bridge or partial depending on the situation. I hope that helps! Is a root canal in pregnancy safe?
Hello, A root canal during pregnancy is safe and recommended if you're in severe pain. I would advise the consult of the dentist with your OB/GYN just to make sure there aren't any contra-indications. Using the anesthetic during the procedure increases your heart rate slightly, but being in pain every day adds a lot of stress on your body! If you are unable to get the root canal done for whatever reason, make sure that your pain is well managed by prescriptions safe to take while pregnant. Sincerely, Dr. Reiser READ MORE
Clicking in my jaw
Are you having pain with the clicking? Generally clicking means that the disc inside is slipping out of place and back into the correct position. This can be a variation of normal. If it ever stops clicking, it's a bad thing because that means the disc is out of place entirely where a surgeon may need to be involved to reattach the disc. A grinding sound or feeling may indicate that the bones are grinding on each other, with the disc out of place. Hopefully, that sheds some light on your situation and you can always get a second opinion since this is something best seen in person. Dr. Reiser READ MORE
Very swollen and red gums after routine dental cleaning
You may have had a little build up of calculus, or tarter before your gumline. This will make your gums sensitive and throb. The best thing is to keep up with brushing, flooding, and rinsing. Usually is suggest an antiseptic mouthwash like Listerine, but if you're still sore salt water well help. If you have any concern you can always see the dentist for a follow up. Dr. Reiser READ MORE
