Dr. Rawan Tannous's Expert Contributions
  • Should I have toothache after getting a crown?

A toothache that develops soon after a crown is placed is likely related to the gluing process or an uneven bite. Dental cements that glue the crown in place are acidic or rely on acidic primers, which can irritate the nerve in a tooth. This can cause pain or temperature sensitivity that usually lasts a few days but can persist for up to a year. New crowns can also cause pain if the fit is slightly off and causes an uneven bite. If the crowned tooth meets the opposing teeth before all the others when biting down, pain will likely persist until the crown is filed down. READ MORE

  • Can I use mouthwash with a temporary crown?

Yes, mouthwash is perfectly fine to use with a temporary crown. The cleaner you can keep your temporary crown the less inflammation and bleeding occurs when placing the permeant crown. READ MORE

  • How long does it take to get 2 dental implants?

The actual surgical placement of a dental implant in an ideal site takes about 30 minutes, about 3-4 months for the implant to integrate to the bone and at that point the final restoration can be fabricated. READ MORE

  • Can dentures be permanently glued in?

Permanent dentures are an alternative to traditional removable dentures. Surgically placed dental implants replace missing tooth roots and create a stable base for permanent dentures. They are not the same thing as dental implants, but they are attached to them. READ MORE

  • How are full dentures held in place?

Complete dentures rely on the thin layer of saliva between the denture, jaw bone, and gums. They used the natural shape of your jaw to hold them in place. Complete dentures don’t have the support of your natural teeth so they may require some practice before they feel natural in your mouth. A properly fitted denture shouldn’t slip or fall out. Your dentist will evaluate your oral health and help you choose the best product to keep your dentures secure in your mouth. READ MORE

If the infection doesn't get better within 2 days of taking the antibiotics and gets worse, then I recommended going to the nearest ER to get it checked. READ MORE

  • Is front tooth implant surgery painful?

The procedure itself is not painful since it is performed with either general or local anesthesia to completely numb the mouth. After dental implantation, once the numbness wears off, mild to moderate pain may be noticed. You can take over-the-counter painkillers to deal with any discomfort. After about 24 hours, you may notice bruising, swelling and tenderness around the implant site. The implant area will likely feel very tender and sensitive. You should avoid hot foods and crunchy foods. Your dentist will give you a full list of instructions and a recovery timeline to follow. You’ll continue to notice these symptoms for about 3-7 days after your treatment. After about 5 days, your pain and discomfort should subside quite a bit. After about a week, your mouth will feel mostly normal again. READ MORE

  • Braces

Never too old!! Whether you are 10 or 80, the process of straightening teeth is the exact same and you are never too old for braces or Clear Aligners. Adults have denser bone tissue than children, so it may take a little bit longer to move your teeth, but not by much. READ MORE

  • How long does pain last after gum pinhole surgery?

Recovery from a pinhole graft is reasonably quick. Usually a week of recovery time, with some swelling and tenderness. Avoid hard, sharp, and stringy foods and avoid brushing, flossing, and touching the area until your dentist gives you the green light to resume routine oral care. You can use OTC pain medications if needed. READ MORE

  • Can veneers cause gum pain?

If a space is left between veneer and the margin of your prepared tooth or the veneer is bulky and overcontoured, bacteria can leak in and cause irritation, inflammation, and bleeding and possibly decay. Excess cement or bonding material can also irritate your gums. Another reason is poor oral home care: frequent flossing and brushing, are extremely important for the longevity of porcelain veneers, but without vigorously doing so, can spare you from periodontal disease and keep your veneers well-maintained for years. • Toothache when flying and having a cold

Yes, you can get toothaches during a flight. The pain comes from the change in pressure as you climb to higher altitudes. The condition is also known as barodontalgia. When you have a cold, your sinus cavities can get blocked with excess mucus. Since you have sinus cavities near your upper molars, this pressure can make your teeth sore. To relieve the pressure, you can place a warm, damp towel around your nose, cheeks, and eyes. If the pain is lasting or persistent, consult with your doctor to see if you have a sinus or ear infection. READ MORE
