Michael W. Hennessy, MD, works at Texas Spine Consultants out of Dallas Texas. Dr. Hennessy brings with him a fellowship trained education under the auspices of Dr. Behrooz Akbarnia, a world renowned specialist in scoliosis. His special clinical interests include minimally invasive spinal procedures, spinal deformities, and various spinal trauma for patients of all ages. In his spare time, Dr. Hennessy headed up a volunteer effort with Habitat for Humanity, acting as a Chairman to fund the building for houses.

First recommendation is to see a pediatric orthopaedic specialist. The doctor can evaluate how severe the curve is as well as the skeletal maturity of your daughter to give a better idea of risk of progression. There are several factors that are involved before treating the curve. READ MORE
How to help a child with scoliosis?
It can be a challenge to explain the necessity of medical treatment to an 8 year old. Try to be supportive but explain to her that the brace is there to help her grow up straight. This will help her to prevent future problems. The alternative is to take the “scare” approach and explain that if she doesn’t wear her brace, she may end up needing surgery if the curve progresses. This is a challenging question. It really depends on the surgery you need and the condition you have to determine your chances of playing in the NFL. At what age should my wife check her bone density levels?
Unless she has a known metabolic disorder that inhibits calcium or vitamin D absorption, there is no need for her to have a bone density exam until she is post-menopausal. Usually that occurs around age 50. READ MORE
At what age should one be concerned about osteoporosis?
There is not one specific age. The greatest risk for osteoporosis is being post-menopausal in women. There really are not any symptoms of it unless you develop a fracture due to the weak bone. READ MORE
How is sciatica pain diagnosed?
Sciatic pain is a somewhat generalized term for posterior thigh pain. True sciatic pain comes from irritation of the sciatic nerve which is a large nerve that runs down the back of your leg. This answer really depends on the patient. If the patient is not very active and does not do many activities that require fast change in direction, then having acl reconstruction is not always necessary.
