Dr. Cassandra M. Klyman M.D's Expert Contributions
  • Is Trichotillomania a serious condition?

Trichotillomania is disorder that is on a spectrum from mild to serious in terms of the time it consumes and the amount of hair that is pulled out so that there is more or less obvious disfigurement and embarrassment. Usually, medications that are prescribed are anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medications -- occasionally, atypical anti-psychotics are used to boost efficacy. I have found that CBT and the use of workbooks that can be gotten online can be helpful. Also, wearing cotton gloves or mittens when the hands are idle helps prevent the pulling. A good therapist is a must. A spouse can help by being supportive in the above efforts and providing  pleasant distractions.  Cassandra M. Klyman, M.D. READ MORE

  • Should I really go to psychotherapy?

It’s usually a good idea to explore individual issues in oneself that others will question or condemn. Learning what it means to you will help you understand and better explain yourself to others that matter to you so that conflicts and resentments get resolved. Gender issues are a hot and potentially divisive issue in families. Therapy will help you help your mother to feel she did not do something “wrong.” READ MORE

  • I am very scared of darkness. What can I do to overcome my fear?

There are several cognitive behavioral strategies you might try: # try to put a specific name and description to the fear #2 when and here did it first appear#3 what comes to mind when you put yourself back in that time and place? Then behaviorally talk about your above discoveries with someone you trust and experience the dark with them there to reassure you. Let them move further and further away from you so that you are only connected by their reassuring voice. After 13 tries your fear will likely be overcome. Good luck READ MORE

  • Can anxiety and stress lead to frequent urination?

The simple answer is yes but often a urinary infection or diabetes may also be a cause that can happen to a person under stress when their immune system is overburdened READ MORE

  • How often is depression treated without anti depressants?

Medication and not just antidepressants may be very useful as is psychotherapy READ MORE

  • My brother is 39 and single, and I think it's making him depressed. What can we do to help?

Recommend and pay, if necessary for a psychiatric evaluation. READ MORE

  • My wife has no urge for sex. What should we do?

Take care of those “issues” READ MORE

  • What should I watch for when Adderall Xr 10 mg medication has stopped

Stopping Adderall 10 mg XL should not have any adverse reactions in and of itself because it is out of the system within 24 hours anyway. However, you may expect to see a return of the original symptoms for which it was prescribed -- poor time management, forgetfulness, distractibility, restlessness, figidiness, etc. A positive may be the return of appetite and easier ability to fall asleep. • Is premenstrual syndrome normal?

Yes, 2 different approaches. The first is to try on your own to limit your salt intake and take Vit B6 for the two weeks prior to your period. The second is to take a prescription SSRI for those same two weeks. Good luck! Dr Klyman READ MORE
