Sandra L. Aponte, MD, MBA, FCAP, FASCP. Certification from the American Board of Pathology in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology and Cytopathology. Cytopathology is a branch of pathology that studies and diagnoses diseases on a cellular level. Prior to working with PLUS, Dr. Aponte served as Assistant Director at Shiel Medical Laboratories in Brooklyn, NY, and was Chief of Cytopathology and Associated Director at Staten Island University Hospital. She worked for Quest Diagnostics close to a decade. With over 26 years of experience, Dr. Aponte says she has had a successful career due to her perseverence and hard work.

Does a pathologist perform autopsies?
Yes, the forensic pathologist performs autopsies. They determine the cause and manner of death. As a rule of thumb the autopsies are performed when the death is an accident, unexpected or suspicious for murder or suicide. natural causes, such as heart disease, cancer, are reasons to performed an autopsy. How long can I expect my results from a stool analysis?
It depends what was the analysis for, eggs, parasites, blood. Should be done within a week, a culture for microorganisms may take longer, give it 2 weeks. READ MORE
How can I get screened for genital herpes?
You may have several tests done. A direct scrape of the lesion can be send for cytology, culture, or blood test may determine if you have antibodies against the virus. READ MORE
Does an elevated CA-125 indicate cancer?
Not always. Normal conditions and tumors alike may increase this level. READ MORE
Can a pathology report be wrong?
Yes but it is very rare. Significant diagnoses or unexpected diagnoses should always be seen by more than one pathologist for second opinion/consult. READ MORE
What does a urinalysis for kids examine?
A urinalysis in a child is usually requested if the doctor suspects an infection or a kidney problem. Sometimes a routine urinalysis before joining a sports team. The urinalysis looks for blood cells and bacteria. If it's negative, there's nothing wrong. I hope this helps. READ MORE
What is the cause of my son's persistent cough?
Hello, Persistent cough is usually due to post nasal drip, meaning he has some sort of allergy or cold and the nasal nose fluid mucus drips into his throat and causes him to cough. Other reasons to cough are virus infection and esophageal reflux, meaning his food comes back to his throat from his stomach. Yes, it is a serious problem and indeed you should had been called by the physician. A 3 y/o male hemoglobin should be about 10,9 to 15,0 g/dl. There are many factors effecting this result. Should my child be getting a blood test often?
Many people have Vit D deficiency. It is important she gets the blood tests to see if the Vit D (I assumed she's on Vit D) is working. So, yes, she should have an annual test to determine if her levels are normal after treatment. She needs 600 International Units a day to keep a normal level. READ MORE

Get to know Pathologist Dr. Sandra L. Aponte, who serves patients in Florida.
Dr. Aponte served as Cytopathology Director of the laboratory serving the prestigious gynecology and obstetrics company Women’s Care from 2020 to 2023. Currently she's the Lead Pathologist of Quality Control.
“I was raised by a single mother in an educated, yet middle class family, enduring difficult financial times. The eldest of four children, many responsibilities fell on my shoulders as a child. I became very driven, I studied, worked hard towards making myself a better human being and a more educated person” says Dr. Aponte.
After graduating from the Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine in 1988, she moved to New York City and embarked on an internship in a Surgical Year at Northwell/Staten Island University Hospital. Her passion for pathology led her to pursue a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology, which she successfully completed at Mount Sinai Hospital/Beth Israel from 1989 to 1993 in New York City.
In addition to her medical training, Dr. Aponte holds a Master of Business Administration degree from New York Institute of Technology, showcasing her commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
With an unwavering commitment to excellence, she became board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology & cytopathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath). The mission of the ABPath is to promote the health of the public and advance the practice and science of pathology by establishing voluntary certification standards and assessing the qualifications of those seeking to practice the specialty of pathology.
Among her professional affiliations, Dr. Aponte is an active member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the College of American Pathologists.
Pathology is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues, body fluids, and in some cases, the entire body. Pathologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and management of diseases through laboratory methods.
Attributing her success to perseverance and hard work, Dr. Aponte has been the recipient of numerous accolades throughout her career, including a CAP Scholarship for Spokesperson School, the Janet M. Glasgow Achievement Award through the American Medical Women’s Association, and several prizes for her scholarly research and writing. She is the author of eight journal articles, some of which have been included in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, the American College of Physicians, and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.
Outside of the office, Dr. Aponte’s interests include: human traffic ministry, animal rescue and advocacy and talent/modeling work. Her favorite professional publication is the American Journal of Surgical Pathology.
