What are the side effects of having your gallbladder removed?
Generally none; however, although rare, some people get loose bowel movements which usually eventually disappears. It is rare for diarrhea to last months or years. It is taught to be an increase in bile acids which enters the large intestine. Medications like cholestyramine or loperamide (immodium AD) can be used. Limit amount of greasy foods, dairy products, caffeine, and sweet foods. Patient must refer to surgeon if diarhea is bloody. Abdominal pain, fever, yellow discoloration of eyes or skin, diarrhea lasting for several weeks or months. READ MORE
How painful is hernia surgery?
Depends on how big is the hernia and what kind and type of operation involved. Generally 90% of hernias are in the groin. Pain after surgery is usually mild to moderate if local anesthetic is applied. READ MORE
How long do you stay in the hospital after hernia surgery?
Generally, hernia surgeries are done as outpatient and only stay for few hours until patient is fully recovered and released same day. However, if the hernia surgery is extensive and complicated especially if a major(open)incision repair is performed such as huge abdominal hernia or if the patient has complicated medical problem like a heart condition or dialysis (kidney) problems , patient on blood thinners like Coumadin or the newer blood thinners, patient may have to stay at least overnite at the hospital centeruntil patient is medically stable and cleared by specialists and the surgeon delivering care to the patient. Is hernia surgery painful?
Hernia surgery is always painful. They are done under anesthesia. Local anesthetic is injected at the sites of operation after surgery is finished. Pain medication are always prescribed. Pain usually lasts 10 days to 2 weeks. Laparoscopic hernia surgery is much less painful for recovery than a regular open surgery done with major cuts and incisions.
