Get to know General Surgeon Dr. Adrian Lobontiu, who serves patients in California, Washington, and Washington, DC.
Dr. Lobontiu, an internationally renowned general surgeon, serves as the Chief Medical Officer of EndoGastric Solutions (EGS) in Redmond, Washington. He joined EndoGastric Solutions in 2005 and was based in Paris, France where he managed the company’s European business. In 2012, he joined the U.S. team as the worldwide Medical Director in Redwood City, California.
EndoGastric Solutions is a leader in incisionless procedural surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Its mission is “to combine the most advanced concepts in gastroenterology and surgery to develop products and procedures that address unmet clinical needs in gastrointestinal diseases” as stated on their website.
With more than 20 years of experience in surgical practice and 15 years of experience in the medical device industry, Dr. Lobontiu specializes in upper gastrointestinal surgical procedures such as transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF). To date, he has performed or provided device operation support for more than 1,700 TIF procedures.
From 1999 until 2005, he was the Clinical Director at Intuitive Surgical Europe (NASDAQ – ISRG), where he introduced the company’s revolutionary technology to Europe, obtained CE mark before FDA approval, and initiated the world’s first robotic surgical procedures. His career also includes research management roles in pharmaceutical companies such as Schering AG in Berlin, Germany.
Internationally published and an invited speaker at international conferences and congresses, Dr. Lobontiu earned his medical degree from the University of Medicine of Targu-Mures in Romania, where he also completed his residency in general surgery within the Surgery Department. He then went on to complete his residency in general surgery at Pierre and Marie Curie University – Faculty of Medicine in Paris, followed by his fellowship in general surgery at Henri Mondor University Hospital, in Paris, France. In 2012, he obtained the Effective Use of Power Certificate of Stanford Executive Program from Stanford Graduate School of Business in California, United States of America.
In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is a member of the French Surgery Association (AFC), the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the New York Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (NYSGE).
