  • You Have Advanced Lung Cancer, Now What?

So, you were just diagnosed with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and your head is full of thoughts and concerns about the future of your loved ones and yours. It is difficult to take a lung cancer crash course with Dr. Google in preparation for a consult with your oncologist when your...

  • My grandfather has cancer that has spread across his body. Should we put him in hospice?

Depending on your grandfather‘s age and the type of cancer, treating him with palliative care only (Hospice) may be the best decision. Sometimes however, the type of cancer diagnosed could open the door to active treatment with excellent results, for example when we treat lymphoma, talk to his oncologist and see what they recommend. • My grandma just entered hospice care. How can I help?

I would contact the hospice nursing director and ask to change caregivers for your relative. Patients should be able to feel comfortable with their doctors and nurses. It might be wise to ask your grandmother to add you to her HIPPA list so confidentiality is not an issue. As for what you can do for her, just try to spend as much quality time with her. Dr. Calvo. • How can I tell if I'm anemic?

Feeling weak and cold are symptoms that are not specific, they could indicate anemia but also other conditions such as a low functioning thyroid gland, undiagnosed diabetes, or chronic inflammation. I would highly recommend you go see your primary care physician for a routine exam and bring up those symptoms. Pay attention to weight changes, changes in bowel habits, presence of blood in stools, changes in your nails or hair as well as usual cravings (like craving ice or starch, craving chocolate does not count), if you have any of them also bring home up to your doctors attention. • I want to be a bone marrow donor

That is a great way to honor a loved one and save a life in the process. You can join the bone marrow registry here: https://bethematch.org Bone marrow donation is now done via peripheral blood with a leukopheresis machine after treatment with growth factors. In other words, they will give you a bone marrow booster to make your stem cells come out to your blood stream, then you get hooked to a pheresis machine (similar to the one used for platelet donation) and they collect your stem cells (called CD 34 cells). That sample gets frozen until it is ready to use. They will not poke your hip or breast bone. Hope this is helpful. Dr. Calvo READ MORE
