Can just cranberry get rid of my UTI infection?
You can try to flush your system, but depending on the how aggressive the bacteria is will determine that. Better to take Vit C 500mg tablets. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Are intimate hygiene products like V-Wash safe for women?
Truthfully, they are not needed and your natural secretions and vaginal flora should take care of itself. I don’t believe that they dry you out unless they are alcohol based. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
My urine smell is very strong. Is there a problem?
Not necessarily. Could be due to onions, peppers or asparagus. Best to go get a urine culture to prove it. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Can my daughter get rashes due to bed wetting?
Usually this does not occur. Also, depending on her age, sometimes we help her along with either behavior modification techniques or with medication to help stop the leakage at night. We typically initiate this at around age 8 if the person is still wetting the bed. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
How can I prevent a UTI during my pregnancy?
Take vitamin C 250mg twice a day and drink 5 glasses of water per day. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Can my UTI medication result in heavy bleeding during my periods?
Absolutely not associated. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
What should I do to treat my enlarged prostrate?
First off, it is a prostate. There are multiple different things which include medicine, minimally invasive procedures, and surgery, which is reserved for those who fail those first few. Seeing a specialist who specializes in BPH is a great start. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Why is my morning urine so dark?
It is concentrated urine. It is normal, but can be corrected by increasing your water intake. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
What is the treatment for inguinal hernia?
If it hurts and you are bothered, then I would seek a general surgeon who has expertise in lap hernia repairs. If you are asymptotic, then I would observe until it gets bigger or there is pain. If there is bowel in the hernia and you feel bubbling in the scrotum, you need it fixed sooner due to the risk of strangulation of the bowel. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Is Pilates helpful in treating urinary incontinence?
No, Pilates are of no help because it is a different muscle group. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
My urine had a reddish tinge. Could it be blood in my urine?
Yes, it could. You need to get a urinalysis to prove there is or isn’t blood in the urine and then go from there. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Continuous urine
What you did was cause severe back pressure into the prostate. Now you have what we call prostatitis. Best remedy is to ejaculate frequently and to use anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen. It also is reasonable to soak in a warm bath. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Can leaked urine in underwear cause a urinary infection?
Yes. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Does urine incontinence indicate a weak bladder?
What you have is classic stress urinary incontinence. It is usually due to childbirth. It is not due to a weak bladder, but a weak incompetent urethra. You can trial pelvic floor rehab or proceed with a urethral sling. I would suggest you make an appointment with a Urogynocolgist or a female urologist. Dr. Niko Lailas, Chief of Surgery and Director, Center for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery, Reston Hospital Center READ MORE
Does frequent urination in pregnancy increase the risk of a urinary infection?
The good news is this is an easy answer: no it does not increase the risk. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Burning sensation while urinating, is this UTI?
Yes, this is consistent with a possible urinary tract infection. My advice is to either go to your primary care physician or to an urgent care and get a clean catch urinary culture. Home remedies can be: take vitamin C 500 mg twice a day for three days and flush yourself with a large amount of water/cranberry juice and sometimes will clear by itself. Dr. Niko Lailas, Chief of Surgery and Director, Center for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery, Reston Hospital Center READ MORE
Urinate, pause, urinate some more
Yes. Once your bladder is full, the kidneys can no longer empty. Once you empty the bladder, then the kidneys diuresis the rest of the urine that was in the kidneys and then comes down into the bladder, making you go to the bathroom again. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Is my urinary incontinence problem permanent?
The good news is it can be treated in two different ways. I would first suggest you find a physical therapist and do pelvic floor rehab. If that does not work, then you may need surgical intervention. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
Blood in the urine. What could be the reason for this?
Blood in the urine at any age is abnormal and needs to be worked up. My gut feeling it that you probably passed a small kidney stone. You need the following tests: 1) urine culture and urine cytology, 2) CT of the kidneys and bladder known as a CT urogram, 3) maybe a cystoscopy if you continue to bleed and the above studies are negative. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
What causes cloudy urine?
You may be taking vitamins that will darken and make the urine smell funny. Also, garlic and onions will do the same. The bubbles in the urine are normal. Dr. Niko Lailas READ MORE
