Jacob B. Stirton, MD is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in upper extremity and sports medicine at Union General Hospital. He treats a broad scope of musculoskeletal problems including sports injuries, hand and upper extremity, joint reconstruction and preservation, and trauma. Dr. Stirton is the Founder and Medical Director of the Union General Sports Medicine Program and also serves as head team physician for Young Harris College and several area high schools.

Dr. Stirton’s passion lies in helping his patients stay active and pain free. He sees every patient as a unique individual with unique needs. While some may be pursuing athletics at the highest level, others may simply wish to enjoy a beautiful morning walk with their dog or to finish a full day’s work pain free.

Dr. Stirton works to restore function and mobility so that you can return to the activities that give your life meaning; whether on the playing field or in your daily life. He enjoys taking care of athletes and active individuals of all ages. Dr. Stirton specializes in all orthopedic surgery and sports medicine conditions of the upper and lower extremities, in addition to cartilage injuries and the use of ortho-biologics.

If I sprained my Achilles tendon, will it likely tear in the future?
Achilles tendon sprains do not necessarily lead to a higher risk of subsequent Achilles tendon ruptures. The quality and integrity of the tendon is what would determine the risk for Achilles tendon rupture. Most ruptures occur in men ages 30-40, the so called “weekend warriors”. This is likely due to diminished overall fitness levels and flexibility while still trying to perform at a high level. Medications such as fluoroquinolones and injections of corticosteroid can also lead to tendon weakening and increased risk of rupture. In short, an Achilles sprain does not in and of itself lead to a higher risk of later rupture, but it may be a sign of an underlying fitness and flexibility problem which would put the patient at risk. What is the best way to treat a sports injury?
Sprains typically take 4-6 weeks to heal. The best treatment to accelerate recovery time is rest, ice, NSAIDs, and appropriately directed therapy. Each sports injury or sprain should be treated on an individualized basis. READ MORE
I have a wrist pain when I throw the ball. What can I do to treat it?
Wrist pain can come from many different things. Something like arthritis, which is a breakdown of the cartilage in the joint itself, would need to be diagnosed with X-rays at your doctor’s office. More mild conditions like tendinitis are much more common and can typically be treated with rest, NSAIDs, and gentle stretching. Once the pain subsides you can ease back into sports activities. If the pain does not get better with that conservative treatment, you would want to seek your doctor’s opinion after a thorough examination. READ MORE
What should I do to ease my pain from a hyper extended knee?
Although you may have experienced a simple knee sprain, it is also possible that your injury is more severe. A knee sprain would typically get better with rest, NSAIDs, and time. However, a more severe injury like a meniscus tear or ACL injury could lead to more long term complications and should be evaluated by a musculoskeletal specialist. After 3 weeks of continued pain, I would suggest seeing your doctor. You may need an MRI to rule out a more serious injury. READ MORE

Get to know Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Jacob Stirton, who serves patients in Blairsville, Georgia and the surrounding Tri-State area.

Dr. Stirton is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in all orthopedic surgery and sports medicine conditions of the upper and lower extremities, in addition to cartilage injuries and the use of ortho-biologics. He is the Founder and Medical Director of Union General Sports Medicine Program, and also serves as head team physician for Young Harris College and several area high schools.

The doctor’s passion lies in helping his patients stay active and pain free. He sees every patient as a unique individual with unique needs. Treating a broad scope of musculoskeletal problems including sports injuries, joint reconstruction and preservation, and trauma, Dr. Stirton works to restore function and mobility so patients can return to the activities that give their life meaning; whether on the playing field or in their daily life. He enjoys taking care of athletes and active individuals of all ages.

Born in a large family of eight children outside Chicago, Illinois, he moved at the age of two to a small farming community in Germantown, Wisconsin, where his passion for sports and the outdoors grew. He attended college at the University of Dallas where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. This is also where he met his future wife, Elyse.

After taking two years away from school to work in the medical research field, Dr. Stirton attended medical school at the University of Texas at San Antonio where he graduated with a Distinction in Research in 2013. He then went on to complete his five-year residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Toledo where he was honored to serve as Chief Resident from 2017-2018. At the completion of his residency, he won the prestigious award as the top overall resident in the program.

Subsequently, he pursued advanced training in the area of sports medicine when he was accepted into fellowship at the University of Kentucky. There, he learned the most up to date and advanced treatments to keep active individuals performing and feeling their best – from high level athletes to weekend warriors to the aging and active. During his fellowship, he served as an assistant team physician for the University of Kentucky Division I SEC sports program, caring for all types of athletes – football, basketball, soccer, softball, baseball, gymnastics, and cheerleading, among others.

On a professional level, Dr. Stirton is an active member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Orthopedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Among his most notable achievements, Dr. Stirton has been the recipient of the Chemistry Scholarship Award (2003), Robert A. Welch Undergraduate Chemistry Award (2007), MS3 Merit Award (2012), Gold Humanism Honor Society Award (2013). Ohio Hand Symposium Top Resident Paper Presentation (2018), ASSH/AFSH Annual Meeting Scholarship Award (2016), MAOA Education Grant for Senior Residents (2017), AOA Annual Meeting Top Ten Poster (2017), Carl L. In his free time, he and his wife enjoy the outdoors with their Labrador Retrievers, Raelyn and Piper. They love being on the water, hiking, and simply enjoying the beauty of nature. On Friday nights in the fall, he can be found attending local high school football games both as a fan as well as the team physician.
