  • What treatment is best for health anxiety?

Hello, this is Jon. Thank you for your questions. It sounds like you are having a challenging time with this. First, if you haven’t already, get a full physical with cbc and include iron, testosterone if male, hormones if female, b vitamins, thyroid, etc. This will rule out any physiological issues and give a baseline of your current health status. Of course without doing a thorough bio psychological assessment it is only speculation what the root cause is of your “health anxiety “. Please seek out an experienced psychiatrist or psychotherapist in your area. This condition is sympathetic of a root cause issue that can be explored and definitely treated so you can have freedom and hope. I will pray for you and your family and for healing and hope and find joy in your life that the Heavenly Father wants for you. READ MORE

  • Can a counselor treat depression?

Hello and thank you for the question. The short answer is, “yes”, absolutely. In more details, first, if you have not, it would be wise to rule out physiological issues first by getting a good physical with blood work that would include screening for thyroid and testosterone or hormones if a female. Other things to consider is your quality of diet, exercise, sleep and life style issues that would include alcohol and drug use, including marijuana, and cigarette smoking. There are several effective counseling techniques available to modify your behavior, but first a thorough biopsychosocial is imperative to identify psychopathology that can be the root cause of depression, including ADHD, PTSD, childhood trauma, etc. There are many acceptable counseling techniques that your provider may be well qualified to use. Of course, you will prefer a therapist with several years of experience. One thing that I have discovered in my 40+ years is depression is rarely just depression, but a symptom of a root cause, such as the loss of hope, or fear. As a Christian therapist I recommend prayer and meditation on scripture, calling on God to calm your spirit and help you find peace and hope. Here’s a good scripture from the Holy Bible that I love; Romans 15:13, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (NIV). I make this my prayer for you. READ MORE

  • Can counseling fix angry behavior?

Hello and thank you for the question. The short answer is, “yes”, absolutely. There are several effective counseling techniques available to modify your behavior, but first a thorough Biopsychosocial is imperative to identify psychopathology that can be the root cause of anger, including ADHD, PTSD, childhood trauma, etc. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an accepted counseling technique but providers also may be well qualified to use other schools of thought. • Can psychotherapy fix my relations?

Thank you for your question. Th short answer is yes. More specifically bough, a licensed marriage and family therapist is well equipped to help you with your marriage. If you are asking the question, your marriage must still be important to you. It does take “ two tango” and you both have to desire to work. Relationship are work whether good or bad, whether friendships or marriage. I love Ephesians 5:25; husbands love your wife as Christ loves the church (followers of Christ- not the buildings or denominations). What a calling and responsibility. Ephesians also reads in 5:23 … wives respect your husband…honor, appreciate, cheer for… but this must be earned. I believe it a miracle two people can come together and stay together in the first place, so marriage must be a divine calling. A good therapist, licensed and experienced will help you to discover what is distracting and taking away the intimacy and guide you back to the two being as one. Blessings and prayers! READ MORE

  • What is the treatment for aggressive behavior?

Thank you for having the courage to ask for help. This is an area I work with extensively. First, i would recommend a thorough physical with lab work that may include testosterone, thyroid, blood sugar, hypertension, etc. As far as therapy, an experienced therapist will complete a in-depth psycho-social evaluation to look for pathological issues associated with mood regulation and Cognitive behavioral therapy is a good treatment modality. They should also rule out other issues such as ADHD, PTSD, etc. I hope this helps. I pray peace beyond understanding of the Heavenly Father and Christ our Savior for you and your family. READ MORE

  • Should I see psychiatrist for depression?

Depression is a word used for a continuum of symptoms, as many as nine different conditions and pathology, with unique, and many times concurrent treatments, from brief therapy, psychotherapy, EMDR, to psychopharmacological interventions. It is important to get a good differential diagnosis by an experienced clinical mental health counselor, social worker, or psychologist. Your treatment plan can determine if consulting a M.D. psychiatrist or an M.D. general practitioner, is the first option for psychopharmacological intervention. Consulting an M.D. psychiatrist is preferred if you have treatment resistant depression. One of the most effective protocols for treatment of depression is psychopharmacological intervention and psychotherapy. I would highly recommend a thorough physical and blood work to rule out any underlying physiological causes of depression. READ MORE

  • What is the best therapy for ADHD?

Thank you for your question. The simple answer is yes, psychotherapy can be appropriate, but, age and severity will determine the protocols. After a thorough physical with labs and a good differential diagnosis from a licensed Psychologist or Psychiatrist, the course of treatment can be determined. For young children, psychopharmacological intervention and behavior therapy work very well. If the child is in school, or when they are in school, it is imperative to work with the school administration and teachers. For adults, pretty much the same, although you can add psychoeducational therapy to the intervention to educate on causes, symptoms, cognitive and behavioral techniques that can assist in managing the symptoms. Some of the greatest leaders and minds in history had ADHD. It is reported Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein had ADHD. When focused, as a child or adult, the boundless energy and enthusiasm can make for a great learner and a great leader. Our Heavenly Father created each of us in his own image. We can be proud and thankful to be created by Him. Therefore, there is no shame in ADHD, but count it a blessing and use it for His glory. READ MORE

  • Is psychotherapy good after divorce?

Thank you for the question. First, I empathize with your loss. I pray God will give you and your former partner peace and clarity where to go from here in your lives. There are so many benefits in psychotherapy after a divorce. It is a major loss and sometimes a betrayal. Even as a Christian counselor (or a counselor that is a Christian) I realize after just a short time of speaking with the couple when they are “unequally yoked”. This does not mean separation is the answer, but that there are some issues that must be dealt with or the relationship could be terminal. An experienced, licensed mental health professional can discover with you the “why“, “what” and, importantly, the “how” if you desire a future “death do you part” relationship. As a wise Clinical Psychologist told me one time, “it takes two to tango”, and this begins from the first time you meet someone, onward. And, if you were not modeled in the home as a child how to be married, then, hopefully, a wise, experienced counselor can guide you to forgive the past and have a more crystalized vision for a hopeful, peaceful and satisfying future. I pray blessings and peace for you, your former partner and you grieving this loss. READ MORE

  • Should I go to therapy for anxiety?

Thank you for your question. Acute episodes of anxiety are most times situational. Although, if not a chronic condition that you have experienced frequently in the past, but something that is out of the ordinary, and having lingered for two months, then you may want to receive some outside intervention. If you have not had a thorough physical in the past year or so, this is a good place to begin. There are so many physiological influences that can present as anxiety. As far as therapy, an experienced licensed psychotherapist can help guide you to discover if the anxiety is being triggered by something current in your life or if there is an unresolved pathological issue that is now just floating to the surface unconsciously causing the anxiety. I pray peace and hope for your future. READ MORE

  • What are some stress reduction techniques?

Thank you for your question. Stress and anxiety are symptomatic of many issues. I would recommend a thorough physical with labs to see if there is a physiological root cause. The sudden onset is indicative of something along these lines. As far as other causes, and remedies, to go down a list of self-help items: diet, exercise, relationships, gratefulness, vitamins. An experienced licensed psychotherapist can help guide you to determine and process any past hurts or traumas. Research shows 70% of our happiness comes from healthy interdependent relationships. Also, distress can come from attempting to control things that are outside of our control, which, again, according to research, can be 60% or more of the things we allow to get in our head that causes worry, stress, anxiety, etc. Thought-stopping techniques, focusing on the things we are grateful for and surrounding ourselves with the people who love us and want the best for us is amazing. And of course, prayer and praying to our Heavenly Father that loves us unconditionally and desires for us to have life, and life overflowing. I pray for a peaceful and hopeful future for you. • What are the treatment options for post-traumatic stress disorder?

Of course a solid diagnosis by a psychiatrist or psychologist and recommended thorough physical with blood work is a good a minimal start. Psychopharmacological is intervention may be necessary to treat acute symptoms, but the standard treatment modality is cognitive behavioral counseling. A skilled clinician in EMDR therapy along with the aforementioned therapy is an excellent option as well. Prayers and blessings on your journey. READ MORE

  • What are the psychological effects of using a wheelchair?

There is a good probability you are experiencing PTSD from this debilitating event. I have seen this in my geriatric clients, the lose of abilities and functions we take for granted are slowly or suddenly taken. PTSD is the brains way of having difficulty making sense of things (not a scientific definition, but functional) . Yes, you need a therapist to guide and encourage you to accepting the losses you are experiencing. Also, the Bible says by faith we are healed. We want to think this is a physical healing but more likely, it is a mental, emotional and spiritual healing. So, find an experienced therapist and look up. READ MORE
