Dr. Robert S. Katz, a distinguished figure in the field of rheumatology, has been recognized as one of Chicago Magazine’s ‘Best Doctors’ every year since the list’s inception in 1998. His exceptional contributions to the field have also earned him a place among the top 1% of rheumatologists nationally, as cited by US News & World Report.
Currently, Dr. Katz is proud to practice alongside his daughter, Alexandra Katz Small, MD, and her husband, Ben Small, MD, at Rheumatology Associates. Together, they provide comprehensive care at their offices located at Rush University Medical Center and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Katz serves as a Professor of Medicine at Rush Medical College and as an Attending Physician at Northwestern Medicine. His commitment to advancing research is reflected in his role as the Joan and Paul Rubschlager Chair for Arthritis Research at Rush University Medical Center.
Dr. Katz’s journey in medicine began with a Bachelor’s Degree from Columbia University, followed by a Medical Degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, and his fellowship in rheumatology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Board certified in both rheumatology and internal medicine, Dr. Katz is renowned for his compassionate bedside manner and dedication to research. In recognition of his outstanding achievements, he has been awarded the prestigious Master designation by the American College of Rheumatology.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Katz has made significant contributions to the understanding of rheumatic diseases. He played a pivotal role in changing the criteria for diagnosing fibromyalgia, which have been accepted by the American College of Rheumatology. With over 450 published works, including original book chapters, papers, and abstracts, Dr. Katz has been instrumental in advancing treatments for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, participating in the first successful trial of the biologic medicine Enbrel. And in lupus, helping to get the first biologic approved, Benlysta.
Beyond his clinical and research work, Dr. Katz is committed to community service, having served on the boards of various organizations, including the Arthritis Foundation, the Lupus Foundation of America, and the Lupus Society of Illinois. He has also lent his expertise as a medical reporter for CBS2 Chicago and as a medical editor for the Chicago Sun-Times.
On a personal note, Dr. Katz cherishes time spent with his wife, Carlen, their 3 children and 11 grandchildren. He enjoys traveling and stays informed through his favorite professional publications.
