  • Don't want to have surgery for enlarged heart--any other options?

    Well before you get that far several things must be determined. 1). The type of x-ray performed with regard to position, if it's an AP view (anterior/posterior) then the heart shadow is almost always enlarged VS. PA view. 2). Your medical history : high blood pressure (hypertension /htn), alcohol use, obesity, etc. 3). An ekg & echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) is needed to determine the size of the chambers, overall heart function & any parts of the heart walls that may not be moving well, etc. This will give many clues to a possible diagnosis if your heart is truly enlarged. 4). If the echo is abnormal then more testing is needed : a stress test & depending on the outcome of that then a cardiac cath most likely will be needed to rule out some other causes. So surgery is not the first option & it truly depends on the underlying cause. Have your doctor refer you to a local cardiologist for further examination & treatment options asap.   • Increasing resting heart rate, what is it?

    Increasing resting heart rate : anything greater than 100 beats per min is considered Tachycardia. If it remains regular it could be : Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia (normal or regular fast beating heart) . If irregular beating is noted it may be: atrial fibrillation (irregular heart beat from the upper chambers of the heart) or atrial flutter a fast but more regularly irregular heart beat. There are several possibilities , so I'd recommend that you see your primary care doctor who can order a heart monitor(ambulatory ekg) that you can wear for 24 hours or more or an event monitor for up to 30 days as an outpatient or refer you to your local cardiologist. The danger of a continuous fast beating heart is enlargement or dilation of the heart known as a cardiomyopathy.     Right sided chest pain can be related to cardiac or heart disease esp. in women as an atypical presentation and in some men as well. It may also be related to lung disease, pleurisy from a cold/congestion /pneumonia, connective tissue disease like lupus, etc., or possibly a pulmonary embolism or clot to the lung.
