How long can you have a cavity before it needs a root canal?
Typically a cavity can progress to a point that it damages the nerve and necessitates a root canal in approximately 6-12 months, depending on the oral hygiene condition of the patient. This is why the general rule is to see a dentist at least twice per year for checkups and cleanings, so a cavity does not have a chance to grow that deep. Waiting it out too long is like playing “Russian Roulette”, not a safe bet. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
How long does it take for dentures to stop hurting?
Dentures should not hurt. If they are new, not unlike a new pair of shoes, they can cause sore spots. Your dentist can make a quick and easy adjustment to correct that. If they are old, they may be in need of a reline, as the base bone shrinks over time and the fit of the denture shifts, again causing sore spots. In either case, a visit to the dentist can quickly fix your problem. READ MORE
Are titanium dental implants toxic?
Absolutely not! Titanium is a very biocompatible material, and in fact one of only 2 metals, the other being zirconium, that actually osseo-integrates, which means it sticks to the bone, and is completely acceptable by the body. So they are very safe to use. In fact, many medical joint prosthetics are made of titanium, and are equally successful. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Does lemon water weaken teeth?
Lemon juice has a pH between 2-3, making it as much as 100 000 times more acidic than water. Even if you dilute it with water, it is still extremely acidic. Acid is the only substance that not only weakens, but destroys enamel. Regular consumption of lemon juice will absolutely weaken your enamel on your teeth. The only way to strengthen them is to apply fluoride, either via toothpaste, or in higher concentration at your dental office. That will make the enamel stronger to resist the acid in lemon juice and other acidic foods. Good luck. Dr. CyrilTahtadjian READ MORE
What not to eat or drink after getting Invisalign?
You can eat or drink anything you like while being treated with Invisalign. The only stipulation is you must remove your aligners when eating or drinking. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
How long after tooth filling can I drink?
That depends on the type of filling material used. Tooth coloured fillings typically cure immediately so you can eat/drink right away. Silver amalgams general require 24 hours setting time, so you must avoid biting on them in that time. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Can you get a cavity from one night of not brushing your teeth?
The short answer is no, if you miss brushing one night, you will not get a cavity. But if this a recurring theme, then “one night” you will start to develop a cavity which will gradually grow thereby necessitating a filling. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
What is the best mouthwash to use for periodontal disease?
There is no such thing as a best mouthwash, as each patient condition is specific and should be treated individually. But 2 commonly recommended mouth rinses are Listerine and Chlorhexidine. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
What happens if the decayed tooth is not removed?
Eventually the decay will progress and the tooth will rot below the gumline. The gum will then grow over top of the tooth and encapsulate it, thereby making it much more difficult to extract, not to mention causing pain and infection/swelling. A non-restorable tooth should be extracted promptly. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
How do you know if your tooth root is exposed?
If your gum has receded, your root will be exposed. It typically will look quite yellow in colour and often will cause cold sensitivity. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian. READ MORE
Is brushing your teeth 3 times a day bad?
No, that is in fact a great habit. Just use the proper technique as taught to you by your dentist. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Do braces move your teeth every day?
Yes, braces induce a constant force, so they are moving your teeth all the time. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Why are my son's gums bleeding after a dental cleaning?
They should not. That could be a sign of a more serious problem. Please visit back to your dentist for re-evaluation. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Can gum disease spread to other teeth?
Absolutely, bacteria never stay put. Your saliva spreads bacteria all around, and allows gum disease and cavities to spread to other teeth. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
I have had 6 root canals in the past. I need another one now. Why is this?
Brushing, flossing and routine cleaning are excellent ways of preventing cavities from starting and helping restorations last longer. However, once a cavity begins and a filling is done, especially if it is deep or large, or a tooth is traumatized, the damage to the nerve is irreversible and irreparable, so eventually in one’s life, a root canal becomes necessary. If you have had 6 over a number of years, then it suggests that your past history was that of constantly needing dental treatment. If they are all recent, then one needs to evaluate why your dentist cannot control the rampant condition. Root canals are not an elective procedure, they are done in response to pain symptoms. If you are not getting pain, you should re-evaluate the dentist’s diagnosis. Perhaps a second opinion to put your mind at ease could help. Good luck with your treatment. My 3 year old daughter grinds her teeth. Is this okay?
Many toddlers and children grind their teeth significantly. It is not normal, but not unusual either. Unfortunately there is not much anyone can do, as a grinding appliance cannot be used as it will hinder jaw development. The teeth will wear prematurely, but hopefully if she loses the habit before the adult teeth start to come in, she may start again on a “clean slate”. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Help! I'm away on vacation and a filling fell out of my tooth.
Hello, not sure if you have returned yet, but I hope the vacation was pleasant otherwise. If a filling falls out and it is not sensitive, or sharp, just keep the area clean till you get to your dentist. If pain sets in, seek immediate care wherever you may be. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Do cavities ever need to be refilled?
Hello, All fillings have a finite lifespan, so they do need periodic replacement, on average every 8-10 years. However, if there is pain, that is not an indication to replace again, in fact the contrary. If symptoms worsen, that could be indication that the nerve is unable to recover, and hence a root canal could become necessary. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
My gums are turning blackish-pink. Is this something that comes with aging?
The colour of one’s gums is as individual as skin colour. Usually darker tones are due to melanin pigmentation, however, this is not age related. A professional evaluation is recommended if this condition still concerns you. Good luck. Dr. Cyril Tahtadjian READ MORE
Can extreme gingivitis be life threatening?
